This was an improvement on the first two novels by Jenny Frame. I thoroughly enjoyed Annie and Riley, and Harry was interesting enough. The idea of bringing an estate back to life provided an interesting backdrop.

The relationship between Harry and Annie gravitated between sweet and infuriating. I loved the gestures from Annie and Harry's relationship with Riley, but the back and forth of 'I need a commitment' and 'I can't be what you need' drove me nuts. Over, and over and over for half of the damn book, and then they reversed positions until I just wanted to scream. But it did manage to avoid a trope that I assumed would pop up, so kudos for that.

It's a fairly quick read, and an improvement from this author. Quade was also an interesting secondary character, I'm assuming a possible sequel for her.

3 1/2 stars. I thought this was a better effort from the author's last two books. It was a pleasant read, but I found the writing and the plot simplistic. While the book started off well, it quickly went into a formularic, too sweet romance with little happening in the last third of the novel. Harry's self-recriminations got very wearing by the end.The plot could have been enhanced by more depth in the supporting cast. The lesbian vicar was a great character, but the reader was only given a very sketchy profile. Bringing a noble estate back to its former glory was an interesting backdrop and more could have been done with that, rather than the constant back and forward "will I, won't I." of the two main characters.

A Pretty Good Read

3 1/2 Stars. This is my first book by Frame, and I thought it was pretty good. Being from the USA and not really knowing titles, I just assumed this book would be a historical romance. I soon realized, when a character said "smartphone", that this is a current book. I actually think I liked it more because of that. It was a current romance, but still made you feel like you were stepping back in history. The story is about a housekeeper, Annie, who moves her daughter into the grand house of the new Countess, Harry Knight. Harry doesn't want to be a Countess, she only wants to renovate the home to it's original glory, than move on with her life. As sparks seem to fly between Annie and Harry, they don't know if they should take a chance or run far away.

I was up and down on liking the characters. I could not stand Henrietta (Harry) at all, in the beginning. I did like the other main Annie, to start off with. But as the book went on, the characters swapped for me. I started to find Annie very annoying, and I realized Harry was really a damaged kid, in an adult's body. As Harry grew, as a character, I grew in my compassion for her. The one character, who did remain consistently likeable, was Annie's daughter Riley. She was absolutely adorable, and one of the better written kids in any LesFic book. She added to the story and the relationship between the two mains.

When it came to the romance of the book. That was also a bit up and down. Get ready for some angst! There was so much "I want you, but I'm running away". "But maybe I really do want you, no, I'm running away again". Drove me a bit nuts. This, and the on and off likeability of the main characters, is what stopped me from rating this more than 3 1/2 Stars. Now, there was some good romantic parts, and even parts that made me feel enough to tear up. The sex scenes were pretty well done also.
I'm going to recommend this book to romance fans, that like some angst in their books. And also don't mind going through some ups and downs, and quite a bit of indecision.

On board the flagship Nagato in the anchorage at Hashirajima, the evening of December 7 found Yamamoto, as usual, playing shogi with staff officer Watanabe. These games between Yamamoto and Watanabe usually came to an end after Yamamoto had won four times in succession, but very occasionally Watanabe instead would win several games in a row. This invariably happened when a low-pressure front was approaching; possibly Yamamoto was the type that is allergic to changes in the weather. That particular evening, however, it was fine, and Yamamoto won. They finished playing rather earlier than usual, then Yamamoto and his staff officers bathed and retired temporarily to their own cabins.

Some of them slept for two or three hours, others could not sleep at all, but not long after midnight most of the staff officers were once again assembled in small groups in the operations room. The officer on duty was air "B" staff officer Sasaki Akira.

The four walls of the operations room were plastered with large maps of the entire Pacific area and charts of various zones of Southeast Asian waters. On the table were a large globe and still more charts, and on a smaller table files of operational orders and radio messages.

Yamamoto was sitting quite still, eyes shut, in a folding chair in front of the big table at the back.

News came in of the army's landing at Kota Bharu, then of the successful landing at Bataan in the Philippines. There followed a long and trying period of waiting. Time seemed to drag interminably. An uneasy silence prevailed in the operations room. No one spoke; the only sounds were the rustle of messages being flipped over in their files and the occasional scratching of a pencil.

Across the passage lay the radio room, from which a cord led to a receiver standing on the table in the operations room, so that those present could hear directly any messages that came in. Eventually, senior staff officer Kuroshima said in a quiet voice, "It should begin any moment now."

He glanced up at the clock on the bulkhead, and a stir ran through the room. At that moment, the radio operator came running in and shouted at the staff officer on duty: "Sir--the repeated to signal."

Sasaki turned to the commander in chief. "As you hear, sir," he reported. "The message was sent at 0319 hours."

Yamamoto opened his eyes wide and nodded. His mouth turned down grimly at the corners. "Did you get that message direct from the plane?" he asked the operator. The Nagato's radio room had, in fact, received the "to, to, to, to..." direct from the skies over Oahu.

"Direct reception?" said Ugaki. "Good work!" The young operator looked pleased, saluted, and rushed out of the room again.

There followed a succession of reports from the attacking units:

"Surprise attack successful."

"Enemy warships torpedoed; outstanding results."

"Hickam Field attacked; outstanding results."

At the same time, the radio in the operations room was picking up directly a great number of uncoded radio messages from the American side. From what Ugaki says in his Sensoroku, the messages tended to be broken and jerky: "SOS--attacked by Jap bombers here...." or "Oahu attacked by Jap dive-bombers from carrier...." When Yamamoto heard one of them--"Jap!--this is the real thing"--a brief grin seemed to pass over his face.

Exactly one hour after the first assault, the second attack force led by Lieutenant Commander Shimazaki Shigekazu, 170 planes in all, swept into the skies over Pearl Harbor and also achieved considerable results before withdrawing. By the time dawn broke over Hiroshima Bay, the number of messages being received in the operations room of the Nagato was dwindling steadily.

From any point of view, the raid had been an outstanding success, and the staff officers could not conceal their jubilation; Yamamoto alone, apparently, remained sunk in apparent depression.

Yamamoto, the Admiral, the womanizer.

Admiral Yamamoto did not want to go to war with the United States; a naval war he felt could be sustained for at most 18 months. But go to war he did and it cost him his life. This is an easy to read history of Yamamoto's life, rich in personal details. He turns out to have been an avid womanizer, with one and perhaps two mistresses throughout most of his career. A man who lost interest in his marriage fairly early and was merely a financial contributor for most of his married life. Most of the personal correspondence quoted and many of his poems were written to his number one mistress, with nothing of substance regarding his wife and children.
Yamamoto seems to have come up with the strategy for the attack on Pearl Harbor, but the detailed tactical planning was the work of his staff. Somehow the debacle of Midway, which occurred under his command and which was planned by his staff, did not result in his immediate replacement. This apparently was due to the Imperial Japanese Forces being in full denial mode and not wanting to high light the disaster by removing the hero of Pearl Harbor.
Yamamoto seems to have been something of a figurehead for most of his career after Pearl harbor and until his death. This could be misleading since the author focuses so much of his attention on Yamamoto's personal life and not so much on his naval leadership.
It is particularly interesting to learn that with the many signs pointing to the fact that the Japanese codes had been broken, they denied this possibility and continued to send the "coded" messages which resulted in Yamamoto's plane being shot down by United States P-38s. There is an excellent book on that subject, "Get Yamamoto" but it seems to be out of print ...

A clear and concise biography.

Yamamoto was regarded as one of Japan's most able pre-WW2 naval officers who rose to become Naval Vice Minister prior to returning to those sea-going duties which saw him in command of Japan's fleets when that war commenced.

Widely regarded as the architect of the attack on Pearl Harbour, from this exceedingly well researched book, we learn that the very idea of such an attack originated many years earlier. During 1927-8 Lieutenant Commander Ryunosuke Kusaka worked simultaneously as an instructor at the naval staff college and the aviation corps. His expertise was aerial tactics and he devised a training scenario which included an attack on Hawaii. He then went on to inject this "theory" into successive students - pilots and future staff officers, over that time. By 1940, therefore, the very idea of such an attack was firmly entrenched in to the minds of all those officers.

Defensive and attack scenarios are a basic part of the teachings of all armed forces. Japan's senior naval staff had devised a training plan whereby Japan would attack the Philippines in the full expectation that the US Fleet would come the aid of that country whereupon the Japanese Fleet would then destroy the US Fleet at sea. When one officer attending such a training session asked "what do we do if the US fails to respond as expected?", the official reply revealed an expectation of all Japanese officers to conform to the accepted thinking of their seniors!

This book reveals Japan's pre-war tactical training as mostly wishful thinking and based on enemy forces doing exactly as was pre-determined by those in charge of strategic planning. In reality, all military plans are changed just as soon as the first shot is fired.

Doubtless, had he survived the war, Yamamoto would have faced a war crimes tribunal. Instead, he lost his life during a conflict which, albeit not of his making, was one in which he went on to play a major role. This book is about this senior Japanese officer from WW2. It is written by a Japanese who clearly understands his subject better than most - perhaps in a way that only a Japanese could. Consequently, we have as complete a biography as one might hope to find.

'Saharsayogam' is enjoying the status of Ayurvedic Practical Prescriber among Kerala Ayurvedic Physicians. 'Sahasrayogam' means one thousand formulations, and on a rough estimate it appears that the number of formulations vary from 700 to 1200 in various versions. It also appears that some more formulations have been added periodically to the original text based on their practical experiences, which resulted in the increase of total number of formulations. The formulations described in the book consist of different Kalpanas like Kashaya (Decoction), Taila (Medicated oil), Ghrita (Medicated Ghee), Choorna (Powder), Asava, Arishta (Fermented liquid), Vati, Gutika (Pill) and Lehya (Linctus). Besides the poly herbal formulations, single drug recipes are also indicated for the treatment of different diseases. In addition to the classical formulations some of the traditionally useful simple herbal recipes are also included in this book.

Researchers are tapping the area's theoretical potential, both in terms of extending basic memory theories to account for the robust effects produced by mnemonic techniques and in terms of using explanations of mnemonic effects to understand basic memory processes. Individual differences in the use of imagery and mnemonic encoding activities are also being explored. This research has provided valuable information for basic memory theories (e. g.

B for the book quality.

I need this book for my course in Unit Operations and have been using it for about a month now. I think the book would be improved for learning the concepts by giving a little more background information - if often seems like it goes from point A to point C or D without mentioning point B. Also, it's very annoying that it references equation numbers from earlier in the book without reprinting them so that you have to flip back to remember what that equation was.

This book is good for a capstone course where you only need to review material, but it is not great (even borderline useless) for classes that focus on one or two of the sections, such as fluids or mass transfer, as it's likely your class will go into more detail than this book. With that said, you definitely want to purchase this book for use down the road instead of renting it. The international edition is much cheaper however.

True Screenwriting Gem -- A great book for writers and film critics alike!

Thank god someone has finally written an intelligent and helpful book on 3rd Acts!!

Having earned my MFA in Screenwriting from USC and working full time in development, I have read hundred of scripts. I can say for a fact that even the best writers can meet their downfall in the crucial third act (see Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown).

I have seen many good scripts crash and burn at page 80 - the start of the 3rd act. Usually the writer has no idea how to resolve their plotlines, and winds up taking shots in the dark. The truly amazing scripts have killer third acts - every moment of the previous scenes as been building to this. The mediocre scripts have satisfying, yet never surprising, third acts. And truly horrible scripts? Well, those writers never considered their third act while writing the first act.

Yanno walks the reader (and screenwriter) through the key types of scenes often seen and usually required in successful 3rd acts. He breaks down the mechanisms of the 3rd act, and of scripts in general, without losing the purpose of writing - to tell a story that evokes emotion.

During his numerous examples, Yanno does not discriminate with his taste in films. He discusses a wide range of movies: classics, modern releases, art house flicks, and even popcorn blockbusters. Most screenwriting books focus on the author's one or two favorite examples, Yanno uses almost 20!

Although I read The 3rd Act as a screenwriting guide, it works equally as a critical discussion of story structure - and therefore would be a tremendous value to writers and film theorists alike.

I really hope this is the first in a series by Drew Yanno. His thorough and friendly examination of other areas of screenwriting in definitely needed.

Helps with more than just the ending!

I had the privilege of taking Yanno's screenwriting classes a few years ago, and when I heard he was coming out with a new book, I knew I had to buy it right away. While there are so many screenwriting books on the market, there aren't too many that focus exclusively on the hardest part of a script: the ending. As a struggling screenwriter myself, I know how difficult it can be to write a complete script from beginning to end. I also know how difficult it can be to find the perfect ending to a script that refuses to escape from a state of unfinished purgatory. Yanno's book helps a writer escape that depressing limbo by providing helpful insight to end your movie the right way. Yanno knows that a movie's ending can make or break the story. He knows that a bad ending can make the best movies feel stale, and agrees that even the opposite is true; that a great ending can make a mediocre movie seem better than it really is. The strength in Yanno's book not only rests within the many examples of great movie endings, but also with a good amount of bad movie endings--some of those movies being movies that Yanno himself liked a lot, but agreed that the quality of the ending is the reason why the movie is seen as a failure. While the bulk of this book is focused on showing how to create a great ending, by use of these examples, Yanno has also included a list of thirty questions that I believe is the perfect blueprint for a screenplay as whole. While those thirty questions help the writer form an ending that bests fit with the script's story and characters, they also help the writer isolate the core of the script's story and characters in order to make a complete work more complete. In closing, Yanno's book is a vital (and affordable) tool that any screenwriter should possess in order to make your work truly stand out (in a good way)!

Keeping It Simple

Problem solved! Drew Yanno's book arrived just in time as I was about to give up on a spec script that I had wrestled with for the past six months.

After reading his book, my problem became quite clear. I had conflict, I had resolution, but I had neglected to answer the question raised in the first act.

I use the word "simple" purposefully as this is the style of Mr. Yanno's writing. He lays out guidlines for great endings in clear, plain English. No math degree needed, no plot points, no concentric circles, no diagrams.

The book is rife with specific examples of how great endings were fashioned in a wide range of great movies from Casablanca to Gladiator. His dissection of the third act of the latter was particularly instructive to me as it always struck me as contrived. Walking through the construction of the act, the author explained how and why it was the best way to resolve the ultimate conflict while answering the first act question.

So, if you think your script needs a geometric fix, read McKee. If you want to satisfy your audience with a great ending, read Yanno.
