Still good to have as a second opinion

Compared to the NG guide book...there were a lot more pictures and not as much detailed information on traveling to/in Vietnam. Still good to have as a second opinion.

I used this book throughout the country and really enjoyed its accuracy

I used this book throughout the country and really enjoyed its accuracy, photos, and descriptions. Do understand though, that the EW series travel books are basically more in-depth colorful travel brochures. But for the traveler on a typically American worker's-length vacation, they are superb. EW books are the catalyst for fully exploring foreign countries/cities.

About the Author
Dominic O’Brien is renowned for his phenomenal feats of memory and for outwitting the casinos of Las Vegas at blackjack. He has won the World Memory Championship eight times, holds a host of world records and was named Brain of the Year in 1994 and Grandmaster of Memory by the Brain Trust of Great Britain. He is President of the World Memory Sports Council. His books include Learn to Remember and How to Develop a Brilliant Memory Week by Week.

An excellent guide to advanced memory training

If you are just starting out learning how to improve your memory, then a book by Harry Lorayne might be more appropriate for you. But if you already have a trained memory and want to take your skills to the next level, then I recommend this title strongly. O'Brien explains his DOMINIC system quite well in this work; now I understand why he uses people instead of only objects. While I don't believe that a beginner would find the DOMINIC system as easy to learn and use as the Major System, I still encourage people to try both apporaches to determine which works best for them.
Dominic also expatiates on his language learning approach, offers mathematical shortcuts, and presents ways to memorize quotes and speeches. Some great ideas based largely on the loci system can be found here.
In many ways I like this updated version of How to Pass Exams better than How to Develop a Perfect Memory, another book by O'Brien that I own. Dominic has contributed some unique refinements to the field of mnemotechny, so I view his books as worthwhile purchases for any memory training expert and perhaps for a few mnemonics neophytes, too.

A Very Useful Book for All Students

This book is an easy and interesting read. This book will help anyone who needs to know how to memorize information, take notes, and speed read do so. Dominic covers topics such as speed reading, mind mapping, the link method, giving presentations, how to learn foreign languages, remembering quotes, remembering historical dates, geography, and when to review information so that you don't forget what you've learned. This book was a huge help to me while I was in college. The information contained in this book saved my college career. I was struggling in school. I was consistently pulling of several D's and F's in classes for a semester.

I then learned the principles that Dominic O'Brien puts forth in this book and the results were astonding. Just by swithch over to these principles of study I was able to raise my grades a letter grade. Then, through spending time each day practicing memorizing information using Dominic's method to memorise information I found my memory improving. I found that the more I practiced the more information I could memorize at one time, which meant less time to have to memorize information. This resulted in less time that it took me to study with better grades than I was making before. I even got so good that I learned that I could in some classes memorize the information get done sooner then I could before and then go back and memorize the information to chapter, chapter title, page, and paragraph number. I actually did this on one test at my University, I was able to recall information not only by quote but also by chapter, chapter title, page, and paragraph number and did so on the test. I made an A on the test.

I've also increased my reading speed 550-850 wpm simply by practicing the suggestions that Dominic makes in this book. His chapter on mind mapping has all you need to know to start mind mapping. I've tried mind mapping and have found that by mind mapping I can for once keep up with the pace that my professor is lecturing at, I could not before. Furthermore, by mind mapping I've learned to take better notes. I've found that I can retain more information in my memory after mind mapping than traditional notes.

This is what I've achieved by putting every thing into practice that Dominic has in this book and I'm a firm believer that it will work for you as well if you are willing to put it into practice. Since, that is the case I recommend practicing memorizing information at least 30 min to an hour each useing Dominic's methods and you'll find that you'll get better. A better memory comes with practice.

Finally, as far the system that Dominic uses to memorize numbers, it is much easier for a beginner than the major system. When I was a beginner I found the major system hard because the in some cases two or more different consants can both stand for one number in Dominic's system one letter always stands for one number and the letters that correspond to each number are easier to learn because for the most part it follows the alphabet. Case in point, the Dominic system is much easier and less confusing to learn. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Rosa's voice is amazing

I felt a mixed bag with "Shine" by Candy Gourlay, shortlisted for the Guardian Children's Prize. Let's start with what I liked.

I liked:
* Rosa's voice. I could hear the thirteen-year-old child and the loneliness brought about by her imaginary condition, the Calm, which is based on a legend we are told early in the book.
* The imagery of Mirasol with its beach, mountain, village and its rainy climate
* The fleshed-out characters of Yaya and Rosa's father
* The page-turning nature of Candy Gourlay's writing. It is very accessible and simple.
* The sense of horror and shock value built up beautifully.

What I did not like much:
* I didn't like Kara's voice. It took too long for the reason or the author of these pieces to be understood, and meanwhile they were not interesting and interrupted the flow of Rosa's narrative.
* The coincidence of a visit that led to the incidence with Kara (avoiding spoilers here)
* It didn't seem likely that Kat would have asked Kara to open the door knowing how her personality was depicted (ditto see above)
* How Rosa was kept away from potential friends, other teenagers in the village with the Calm. As there is a huge stigma associated with the Calm, and Rosa's father was a specialist in the affliction, he was in the best position to alleviate Rosa's loneliness by creating a safe haven in which she could socialise with others like her.
* How her specialist English father could have enough work on the small island of Mirasol
* Spoiler here! And maybe worst of all, the depiction of delusional paranoia did not seem at all authentic or researched. Sometimes it was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in terms of the polar-opposite personalities, and at other times it was like a violent psychopath. When what it should have been was a deluded personality who didn't necessarily have the highs of being "normal" but the medically-treated lows when she was down in the dumps.

As this is a story for children and teens, then the real parts should have been true and researched. Mental illness is very real, and many families experience it. A compassionate handling of mental illness might either equip a child to handle their own circumstances better or at least uplift them while reading about it. I don't feel "Shine" did either. However, it has tremendous value as a well-told but ultimately tall story.

Shine by Candy Gourlay - Realistic Fiction, 5th grade and up - I was absolutely captured by this novel. I couldn't stop reading it! Candy Gourlay has a way with words. I would connect students who love Margaret Peterson Haddix's book Among the Hidden. The idea of a girl who lives in a community filled with superstition and fear reverberated throughout the story. The idea of having almost all of your friendships through an online world was so beautifully shared in the book. I found this book haunting, fascinating, and powerful, highly recommended.

This book is the first to compile and present the latest clinical strategies and offer a hands-on clinical guide to inference based therapy (IBT) for individuals with all types of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

Recent findings have shown that OCD is primarily a reasoning problem whereby people erroneously infer that there is a reason to doubt themselves despite their senses and common sense saying otherwise. In the IBT model, the obsessional doubt is considered the source of OCD and the starting point for therapy. Inference-based therapy (IBT) offers an economical model effective for all OCD subtypes and is designed to help the person regain confidence in a realistic appreciation of events and move away from an imaginary doubt.

Using cartoons and illustrations, as well as clinical examples from the full range of OCD subtypes, this book is a fully interactive manual for clinicians, practitioners, and students. The book integrates theory and application, and pays special attention to case management, detailing all stages from meeting the client and explaining the approach, right through to terminating therapy and follow-up.

About the Author
Dr Kieron O'Connor is currently the director of the Centre for research on tic and obsessional disorders at the Fernand Seguin Research Center , Louis H. Lafontaine hospital affiliated with University of Montreal. He is also professor at the University of Quebec in Outaouais. His research focuses on improving understanding and treatment of people suffering from obsessive-compulsive spectrum and related disorders. The current IBT program is a product of this research . Dr. O'Connor's publications include Behavioural Management of Tic Disorders (Wiley, 2005), and Beyond Reasonable Doubt: Reasoning Process in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (with F. Aardema & M. C. P�lissier, Wiley, 2005).

Dr Frederick Aardema is a clinical researcher at the Fernand Seguin Research Center, Louis H. Lafontaine hospital affiliated with the University of Montreal. He played a vital role in the development of the inference based approach to the treatment of OCD and his work on reasoning led to the development of an innovative theoretical approach to pure obsessional ruminations. Dr. Aardema has published widely on obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. His books include Beyond Reasonable Doubt: Reasoning Process in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (with K. P. O'Connor & M. C. P�lissier , Wiley, 2005).

About the Author

After graduating from Wayne State University, Mr. Marion invested several years working for Chrysler Canada. He then transitioned to a teaching position at St. Clair College, focusing on math and technical drawing. Mr. Marion used his collective knowledge and experience to author Math for Welders as a career capstone.
