THE MOST INFLUENTIAL MODERN PRETERIST'S FIRST BOOK

Max R. King (born 1930) is the founder of the school of "Preterist" (i.e., "Historical" fulfillment of biblical prophecy) thought known as Transmillennialism. King served as a minister in the Churches of Christ for 40 years. He is also the author of the more comprehensive work, The Cross and the Parousia of Christ: The Two Dimensions of One Age-Changing Eschaton.

He states in the Preface to this 1971 book, "Being fully aware of the divergent views and conflicting interpretations that exist in Biblical eschatology, the author has attempted in his studying and writing to synthesize the whole field of prophecy into a unified and systematic presentation of God's scheme of redemption. God's redemptive purposes are so constituted and unfolded in prophecy, that unity and harmony of divine thought and purpose can be maintained only by a true and consistent principle of interpretation."

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"Thus, the disciples were taught to look for the Kingdom of God in their generation. If the kingdom prophecies were to have a literal fulfillment, then revelation caused the church to occupy a false position; for no earthly kingdom came in their day. But if the spiritual application is made, revelation did not lead the church to occupy a false position." (Ch. 1)
"(In 2 Pet. 3:10, 13) What is the basis for saying one is literal and the other is spiritual? If such a change in the nature of the world is without textual support, why could not a reverse interpretation be made of the nature of these two worlds? If it is a matter of choice, we could have either spiritual, both spiritual, or both literal." (Ch. 3)
"But the truth is, 'last days' NEVER refer to the Christian age, but as we have shown, to the closing period of the Jewish age, which was from Pentecost to the fall or Jerusalem (or the end of the world)... The 'last days' were the infantile period or childhood days of the church, during which a change was being made from one age to another age." (Ch. 5)
"If inspiration taught that Christ was coming in 'that generation,' and we say he hasn't come yet (nearly 2,000 year later), someone is wrong... Could it be possible that inspiration was RIGHT and 20th century man is WRONG?" (Ch. 6)
"It is the conviction of the author that the ending or the continuity of God's material world is totally unrelated to God's scheme of redemption... Denial is made, however, that the world involved in redemption and destined to end at Christ's return is the physical or material world." (Ch. 9)
"The word 'present' (in 2 Cor 5:8) denotes the nearness of Christ's presence due to the clearness of vision and understanding in the age to come. Spiritual life would be brighter, and understanding clearer in comparison to the dawning hours of Christianity." (Ch. 10)
"But who are the witnesses? (in Rev 11:3-14)... obviously, the two witnesses are symbolical, and not intended to denote two indivdiuals of that time period." (Section III)
"This verse (Rev. 13:10) strengthens the view that the persecutions of Christians by Nero were somehow instigated by the Jews." (Section IV)
"Since Nero stook sixth on the list of the Roman emperors, he was evidently the one on the throne at the time of John's writing. The seventh emperor, who would rule only a short time, would answer to the three month reign of Galba." (Section VI)
"Thus, a literal interpretation of a THOUSAND YEARS greatly detracts from the true meaning and the full impact of Satan's defeat." (Section VI)
"Also, if the second coming of Christ is a literal coming, then according to Peter, it would be the time of this earth's literal destruction. But if Christ is coming to rule on the earth for a thousand years, they either have the coming of Christ one thousand years too soon, or the destruction of the earth one thousand years too late." One of the finest books of its kind ever written. Max King writes in an easy to understand style that leads you through many tough subjects that have been mis-taught for years ... Max King helps the reader understand difficult subjects as he shines the light on the TRUTH! Read this book...then tackle his big book "The Cross and Parousia of Christ" which is his magnum opus. This is only for people who want to THINK.... if you just want to follow the crowd than don't waste your time. But if you want to learn...this book is a great place to start!

About the Author
Alexandra Manukyan was born and raised in Armenia, and since a very young age has been interested in fine arts and spent many years stydyng painting, drawing and sculpture. She graduated art school, college, and State Pedagogical University as an art major in Armenia. After immigrating to the States, she continued her education and majored in Fashion and Graphic design. Since 1990 Alexandra worked in Fashion and Entertainment industries as a designer and graphic artist. In Fashion industry she created screen print art, textile print designs and fashion editorials and worked for the companies such as: Susan Borrows (1991-1994), Bill Glazer and Associates Inc. (1994-1997), CC Collection Inc. (1997-1998), Fashion Life Inc. (1998 to present). From 2002 to 2006 she freelanced for the Entertainment Industry. Quite innovative little book

I fell in love with Alexandra's work ever since I saw her show. I previewed the book online first and my gf bought it for me as a surprise gift recently. As I'm part of a surrealist group I was quite excited to see the book at hand and recommend it to anyone who is interested in oil painting or seeing some fun videos from the book. The book is quite substantial in pages and the right size for being an education book that's easy to carry, but it's a little small for a collection of her works in my opinion. I think it should of been 12x12 high gloss with hard cover or something like that. The gloss cover felt really high quality, once i opened the book there are flat matte pages in full color and it gets really innovative with the QR Codes, its pretty cool scanning her video teasers, it's too bad that you only see the first few minutes of her workshop though, but I've not seen this type of interaction in a book before. The book is layed out very nicely and the reference and tips are very educational. The book is perfect bound and It seems more as an informative education book on how to oil paint and what Alexandra is thinking with her paintings instead of a straight collection. It's still better than paying $500 for her prints though. I've had the book for a week and showed it around a few times, but i hadn't noticed the issues with the binding or pages falling out.

Falling Apart

Four stars for Manukyan's work, one star for printing/binding quality. I waited in great anticipation for this book but was so disappointed at the book size, quality of printing and binding. Honestly, I have never returned anything to Amazon before--this was a first. I'm always careful not to break the bindings on my books, but the pages started to literally fall out as I first opened the book. The picture printing was such a poor representation of Manukyan's work that I truly couldn't stand to look. They were grainy, flat, dingy, and unclear. The cover was flimsy and wouldn't lay flat. It's too bad she is represented this way because her work is imaginative and fresh, and deserves better. As it stands, this art book is unreadable.

A good basic intro to the civil rights movement

I had to read this book for my History 401 class, a week long seminar recently completed. I was not particularly staggered by anything in it but it was pretty solid
Some of the more interesting things about this book include its portrayal of Martin Luther King and the evolution of his thinking. After the civil rights laws of 1964-65, King began to turn more and more towards criticising American capitalism and imperialism in Vietnam (of which he was one of the very first to speak out against). The commercially acceptable version of course is his warm and fuzzy "I have a dream" speech of the march on Washington which was orginally initially to be a mass sit-in at congress, the white house lawn and other government buildings with an emphasis on demanding economic rights but was pressured by the Kennedy administration into being very watered down.
The civil rights period was basically one where tens of thousands of blacks (and whites) risked mental and physical torture and even death to try to dismantle a fascist police state in the South and to try to badger the federal government to enforce its own basic laws on behalf of blacks. But if blacks now increasingly had the glorious right to vote, if they had more opportunities to advance in white capitalist society, they still had no infrastructure in their communities, were still at the mercy of white landlords, police and businesses which overcharged them as consumers and paid them starvation wages as laborers. The ideas of "Black Power" from Malcolm X to the Black Panthers tried to deal with these problems. Since then some things have got better and some things have got worse.
I think the authors somewhat exagerates the "white backlash", even at the time of this books appearance after the LA riots of 92'--it exists among whites to a perhaps signifigant extent but I think that he confuses the rightward shift among political elites and the media with the beliefs of the general population. If anything characterises the political beliefs of the white populations it is apathy e.g. in the 1994 congressional elections about thirty eight percent of those eligible to vote turned out and around nineteen percent of those voted republican. When the Gingrich revolutionaries took office polls showed that relatively few Americans had ever heard of the Contract with America. Polls show substantial support for social democratic measures amongst the general population of this country, despite all the campaigns against "welfare queens" and so on.
The author could have said something about Cointelpro and I probably would have given more or less emphasis to some things than he did.

An excellent, un-biased telling of the black struggle

When I saw this book on a list of book choices for U.S. History AP, I thought it would be a one-sided view and not expresses the beliefs of all races, specifically blacks. However, it was extremely detailed and went through every phase of the struggle. The text was not filled with statistics, as books often are about this topic. Specific incidents weren't in any way 'sugar-coated' and it was clear that the black struggle has been worse than the media and even our presidents have ever admitted. The last chapter, and the most current, proves that few strides have been taken to improve the lives of blacks. We see that times are getting better, but not for all people. Harvard Sitkoff has composed an excellent book that can open the eyes of anyone. A must-read for all!

The Struggle for Black Equality is an essential book for those (and they should be numerous) interested in the civil rights struggle in the U.S. It provides a necessary background in this field, together with the depth and style both the authors are capable of. Thematically as well as chronolically organized, this book can be useful for "beginners" in the field of American Black History, as well as for more advanced students in search of a good reference book.
