A group of experts at the South Florida Water Management District have united in an effort to mitigate this dilemma. Using survey notes, historical maps, photos, and firsthand descriptions, they have reconstructed a vivid ecological--and hydrological--picture of the Everglades of the 1800s, before drainage of the swamp drastically altered the landscape. Painstaking documentation and cross-verification of the historic sources (included on a DVD) allow the reader a front-seat view of the process of "forensic" reconstruction.

Landscapes and Hydrology of the Predrainage Everglades advances the science behind Everglades restoration. This landmark work offers an invaluable lens for scientists and policy-makers into the technical aspects of this massive wetland. The work is equally accessible to the layperson, gathering in one volume the many and varied voices of the first Europeans to set foot in the Everglades.

Christopher McVoy is a soil physicist and wetland ecologist. Winifred Park Said is a botanist, modeler, and environmental planner. Jayantha Obeysekera is a hydrologist and director of the Hydrologic and Environmental Systems Modeling Department at the South Florida Water Management District. Joel VanArman is a biologist, retired after 35 years of Everglades studies. Thomas W. Dreschel is an environmental scientist specializing in aquatic systems.

The best instructions on making arrows I've read.

There are several dangerous aspects to archery--for primitive archery enthusiasts there are more than those faced by archers using modern equipment. One of them is the danger of arrows splintering when fired. Mr. Tomihama's book gives excellent advise on choosing shafts, cutting nocks, making and mounting a steel broadhead or pile heads, fletching and cresting your arrows. Following Mr. Tomihama's process will result in arrows which are as safe as can be made by human hands using wood shafts.

Yes, simple and basic...

and seriously, when the SHTF, you won't be whipping up any carbon fiber arrows in your kitchen, or trading for any aluminium tubing... so best to learn to make good quality arrows with what will be lying around "after the fact"... preppers take note!

Useful and helpful, but could be broader

Let me start out by saying that this book is EXACTLY what it claims to be - it will show you how to select dowels from your local store or lumberyard, straighten them, prepare them, and finish them into complete arrows that you can proudly use alongside your archery tackle (PVC or otherwise - I also enjoy the author's "Impossible Bow" book on plumbing-pipe archery).

So why not 5 stars? Mostly because I wish the book had a little bit more content. Like I say, if what you're looking for is how to turn dowels into arrow for simple home-made shafting, look no further. But what would have made the book irreplaceable would be the inclusion of instructions for making dowels from boards! Dowels are usually so expensive if you're buying at a big-box store that you're almost as well off buying pre-made shafts or finished arrows; get a board of Douglas Fir, and you can turn out dozens of arrows for under $15!

Other than that, and the feeble desire that Nicholas talked about things like prepping bamboo cane for shafting, I really am satisfied with this purchase. Nick's recently gone over to writing full-time, so this is the sort of thing that supports him. I'm happy to help, for the huge volume of enjoyment he's given me on YouTube, and I hope lots of others feel the same, so that he can continue providing us with fantastic content!

I bought this book because as the title suggests is also for Digital Photography...but well...that is just pure marketing...It just have ONE page (pg.83) in reference to digital cameras.
I am very disappointed...wish I can return this book...

Excellent translations

This is a very nice selection of Gogol's greatest stories and plays, capably translated by Christopher English. The translations read far better than other recent versions by Wilks (for Penguin) and Pevear and Volokhonsky (for Vintage). Pevear and Volokhonsky are fine translators, but their more literal approach works better for Dostoevsky and Tolstoy than it does for Gogol. Christopher English translates with a more flowing and rhetorical style that matches the satirical insanity of Gogol. "Diary of a Madman" reads particularly well.

Btw, Robert Maguire did the sterling Penguin Dead Souls, but to the best of my knowledge he never translated Gogol's stories.

This volume would be an excellent choice for anyone looking to get an introduction to Russian literature and Russian realism / existentialism more generally. For this reviewer, highlights include "The Government Inspector", and from the Petersburg Tales, "Nevsky Prospect" and "The Overcoat".

"The Government Inspector" gives a humorous look at corruption in the Russian provinces during the mid-19th century. Reading this play you’ll feel like the plot is something you’ve read or seen before and that’s probably the case, but Gogol was the first to write such a tale. "The Overcoat" as deals with a Petersburg bureaucrat and the one thing that makes his life worth living; a coat. "Nevsky Prospect" highlights two ways in which to deal with the reality of pursuing women romantically. It gives a detailed and unique perspective of two men lusting after two different women. One man’s approach ends in death, the other man’s a near death; fascinating to say the least!

Some readers may grow impatient with Gogol's plots, for they typically unfold at a slow pace. For patient readers, however, they'll likely find Gogol's plots thought-provoking in their underlying statements about perception and how much it relates to one's overall sense of being in the world.
