Gray Becq, who was trapped in the infernal Dire Realm in the first book, has returned to the Lesley Simonton School for the Magically Gifted, but he cannot shake the terror he has experienced. Soon after the new school year starts, a student is brutally attacked and nearly killed, and suspicion falls on moody, irritable Gray. Could he have brought back a demon from the Dire Realm? Fellow student Rehanne, who loves him, can't believe he's guilty, and she searches for the culprit. More students are assaulted, several die, and it grows clear that still others are hiding secrets that may reveal the killer's identity. This book will appeal to many Harry Potter fans; spells fly, and readers watch young men and women grapple with new powers they're discovering in the midst of crisis. However, Sabin lacks J. K. Rowling's ability to make one truly care about her student magicians, as well as her sense of humor. As a whole, this trilogy doesn't hang together well; there's no central character and no grand design to the story line. When the plot unravels

E. Rose Sabin's fantasy trilogy spins to a fast-paced, unsatisfying finale in "When the Beast Ravens." It starts with a suspenseful murder mystery and some serious personal issues, but unravels in the final chapter, as if Sabin had gotten sick of the story.

It's been two years since Gray Becq was kidnapped and enspelled in the Dire Realms. He returns to the Lesley Simonton School for the Magically Gifted, but can't shake his paranoia and fear. And then odd things happen: wands and talismans go missing, and rooms are ripped up. Then a student is near-fatally attacked.

As more students die and the mystery deepens, Gray gets more moody and erratic, and even has lapses in memory. Did he bring a demon back from the Dire Realms? To find the answer -- and the murderer -- Gray must team up with the two powerful young Gifted who almost destroyed the school two years ago...

Though there are a few references to the prequel, this book mainly stems from "A School for Sorcery," a sort of wizard-high-school book. Sabin's writing has improved greatly, and this is tighter, tenser story with plenty of potential. But the ending just sort of putters to a stop.

The first nine-tenths of the book are exceptional. Sabin spins together fantasy -- demons, spells and shapeshifters -- with a compelling murder mystery. Additionally, panther-girl Lina gets captured and interrogated by some nasty police who hate the Gifted. Some truly great storylines, especially Gray being forced to trust and care for his nemesis Oryon, and some of them blossom over the course of the book.

Unfortunately, the solid storyline unravels by the end. After some truly touching, moving scenes, we're treated to a silly trial scene that includes the dead accusing their murderer. All I could think of was "bring out your dead." The final pages seem tacked on, and Gray's final decision seems completely out of the blue.

If "When the Beast Ravens" is the end of E. Rose Sabin's trilogy, then it shouldn't be one. Starts strong, continues strong, and finishes very, very weakly. Here's hoping that Gray's story isn't over yet.

The Power to Overcome Evil

Gray may have been restored to Sabin's School for Sorcery, but all is not well. When disasters strike, suspicion falls on him. What's worse is that he fears the suspicions are well-founded. Is he the cause of all this trouble? Sabin's skill in creating an altogether believable fantasy world is showcased here. The Dire Realm, the Simonton School, and the hearts of her characters draw us in and carry us along to a surprising conclusion.

delightful trilogy for Harry Potter fans

After being taken by the dire women into their dimension, he was tortured and changed into a beast. Gray Becq is no longer enamored with the Lesley Simonton School for the Magically Gifted though he returns there following his summer vacation. He quickly gets into a fight with two of the people who summoned the creatures from the Dire Realms.

Not long after somebody steals artifacts from the students and a demon enters this world. The Headmistress believes that Gray's return from the Dire Realm allowed the demon to enter this dimension. The concern is that they have no spell to send the demon home to the Dire Realm. The students are guarded with seemingly unbreakable spells, but someone manages to do the impossible. Everyone concludes that a killer is bringing in demons from the Dire Realm and using them to break the safety spells. Gray discovers that he hasthe power to travel through different timelines and dimensions. His former enemies join forces with him to battle their common foes and send the demons back to the hell where they belong.

This is the final book of a delightful trilogy that ties up the loose ends from A SCHOOL FOR SORCERY and A PERILOUS POWER, which obviously means reading the previous novels first. The climax is awesome as the students put aside their jealousies to forge a team knowing this is the only chance, remote as that is, to defeat the overwhelming adversaries. Fans of Harry Potter will enjoy this fine series especially this terrific conclusion.

This is great CSS training

I have been somewhat coding my own websites for several years. What I do is start out with some sort of template or other site and then figure out how to code the changes I want to make them unique. This can be frustrating at best when you aren't familiar enough with CSS so I finally bit the bullet and bought a book. I'm glad that I bought the right one because this one rocks! I don't think that I got through the entire book in one day but this made learning CSS so much easier than I thought it would be. There are numerous examples and illustrations included, which is how I learn the best. Also, there are end-of-chapter exercises and a bonus project included in the book. A great resource for CSS.

The perfect guide for beginners that want to quickly learn how to navigate CSS

As a new entrant within the field of coding I was referred to this manual by a coworker of mine. Given that I’m very impatient and don’t have the time for a lot of chatter, this book was a perfect fit for me. The author is definitely an authority on the subject and the material is dense yet succinct. A huge help for me as I progressed through the pages were the end chapter exercises; they were very well designed. Also, I found that the concepts were well explained and perfectly suited for beginners like me, especially the explanations on float and position.

In summation, if you’re looking for a book on CSS that will instruct you clearly and swiftly, you can’t do better than this one.

This book provides very good explanations and exercises to help you really learn how to write CSS code. I am a complete beginner and I have no problem following the book. Great buy! Highly recommended!!

At first Goldie wants him to disappear, but repetitive, gradually softening phrases show how she mellows, using her doll as a buffer. This recap of an everyday squabble models a logical (though not guaranteed) way out of a tantrum.

PreSchool-K-Goldie expresses anger with flailing arms, flaring eyes, and a constricted or screaming mouth. She is angry because her baby brother has sucked the hair of Veronica, her junior fashion doll. When the preschooler states, "I hate Nicholas," she and Veronica get a time-out "to think and be sorry." Initially, "we don't think we are sorry. We think we still hate Nicholas!" Goldie imagines the baby disappearing, then regrets the loss of his post-bathtime smell and hugs. Just after she and Veronica make a contrite apology to an unseen, unheard authority figure, Nicholas uses the doll's arm as a chew toy, leaving the child to wonder once again how she feels about her younger sibling. Goldie's simply stated monologue conveys her conflict with her brother and the range of resulting feelings. As in Good as Goldie (Hyperion, 2000), Palatini uses ink-pen and watercolor cartoon drawings in bold, primary colors to portray her protagonist's emotions. When Goldie is angry, her image fills most of a page; when her feelings soften, her image shrinks in size. The book will work for storytimes and laptimes, to help children identify feelings, come to terms with a younger sibling, or identify the complexities of any relationship.

a girl is not sorry to be angry at her brother

It is wonderful to see a girl as the main character and one who is able to express her anger. When she is told to be sorry, she knows that those aren't her true feelings and says so. Of course there is resolution to this story and there is also humor. I work for a library as an outreach person; I go to schools and child care programs with the purpose of helping children, ages 2-6 understand their feelings. This book is perfect to read to this age group and offers ideas for discussion with the children

Goldie makes my 2 1/2 year old laugh out loud!

This book really makes my 2 1/2 year old laugh out loud. He is a big brother and he can really relate to Goldie especially when she has to sit in a time-out to think about her actions. The illustrations are fantastic and my son laughs throughout the whole book. This is a great book about 'mad' feelings.

She has a little brother (16 months) who she likes a lot but who still gets on her nerves and into her toys.

She thought the last page with Nicholas going after Veronica again was very funny.

Jeffery A. Cole has been teaching mathematics and computer science at Anoka-Ramsey Community College since fall 1981. He started working on the Swokowski series of precalculus texts in 1985 as an ancillary author, and has been a co-author since 1991. His contribution to the Swokowski texts also includes joining the revision team of the calculus text in 1989.

A Must Have book!

I am an adult returning to collage at 59. As you may imagine and higher math training I received has long been forgotten. The fast pace teaching was leaving me without a clue as to what I needed to do in this course. While the text book had answers to the odd questions, with out an explanation of how they were obtained they weren't much use. When I went to school way back then we didn't study algebra, so I wasn't up to speed in the subject as were the younger students just out of high school. This companion to the text book has the odd answers and how they were done, along with explanations. If you are having a hard time you need this book.

Wouldn't take pre-calc without it

All of the odd problems worked out, step by step.

The formatting isn't pretty, but I don't care.

I used this book (11th edition), with my 12th edition text book. Out of my assigned homework, I found only two problems that were different between the two.

By Algebra Woes
The solutions manual is helpful yet can be confusing bcause the manual teaches you the long way which could sometimes prove to be confusing. It is best to understand the formulas first and then use the manual as a cross check to verify that the final solution is correct.
