FOG on my brain...Fabulous Book!
By Gamecube60
What can I tell you...Annelie Wendeberg is one mighty fine writer. I assume if you're reading this you have already begun the journey of Micka that began in the first book 1/2986. And I assume you might be wondering if this next chapter of her life will be as intense and absorbing as the last book...the answer is yes, and more yes. To tell you about the storyline would be robbing you of the thrill of discovery that happens as you turn each page. However I can tell you issues that face Micka in the future, are all too familiar in today's world, more terrifying and intense but fundamentally to the same. This is a book that has you think and at the same time tear through the pages, eagerly awaiting the next twist and turn. I found it different and refreshing that such a fast paced book found the time to truly develop the characters to such a degree that that I was stressing over the situations they found themselves in. As I said, What can I tell you Ms. Wendeberg IS one mighty fine writer, and I think you will really enjoy the ride she offers with FOG.

A Worthy Sequel!
By Sabrina
Fog is a worthy sequel to a gripping tale that features a unique protagonist. One of the things that I love about W. Wendeberg's books is that you just never know where she is going to take a story, so I read this sequel to 1/2986 with the question 'What will happen next?' in the back of my mind the entire time. And when I came to the end, that question stayed with me. I can't wait to find out what happens to Mika and Runner next!

A Transformation of Nature
By Linda Stepp
I have yet to read anything by this contemporary author I did not love; she never disappoints! In my opinion her characters are well defined and their response to some very challenging circumstances blow me away! I actually care about them and am rooting for their success so much I hold my breath reading her work. I always hate it when I finish the books. With other authors I am eagerly looking forward to finishing so I can go on to another book by another author. But not Wendeberg! If I don't have another of her works to follow up with any other author will suffer in comparison.
I usually buy the ebook versions; in my experience they are full of publishing errors but Wendeberg's are pretty much error free; error free means a lot to me as a reader. I did find two errors in the seven works I have read so far. She will only get better with time. What imagination! The amount of research she must do for her period works is staggering. How do I describe the plot? Girl is abused; becomes a sniper and then. . . . she becomes fog?! That's right, but how is that possible? I didn't see that coming!!!

Lacks an English index, otherwise quite good
By John Armstrong
This book has three parts and two appendices: Part One: Basics of Korean (about 25 pages); Part Two: Grammar Points (about 330 pages); Part Three: Frequently Seen Word Parts (4 pages); Appendix 1: How to Sound like a Native (7 pages); and Appendix 2: Useful Korean Language Resources (3 pages).

The core of the book, accounting for 85% of the total pages is Part Two: Grammar Points. It’s basically a Korean pattern dictionary, which includes a large, unnumbered (and uncounted by me) set of entries grouped into 47 sections. The sections are pretty coherent and tend to be functionally oriented, bringing together patterns that can be used to express a particular kind of concept and explaining how they differ or for that matter don’t, i.e. are interchangeable.

The problem with this section for me is that it is very hard to find things in it. If you already know the Korean pattern you can simply look it up in the index, but if you are trying to find the Korean pattern or patterns that you can use to express something you can only characterize in English you will have a hard time, because it’s often not easy to guess from the section names, and there are no English entries in the index (or, alternatively, there is no English index to complement the Korean index).

Apart from this problem, which I think is a major one, there are other things that could be better (for example the Part One: Basics of Korean, is kind of shaky, and the lists of examples are often more repetitive than they need to be; also the Romanization, though intending to follow the South Korean 2000 Revised Romanization standard, is rather inconsistent), but the overall quality of the book, and particularly that of the Grammar Points, is high, and offers information and insights not found in other books.

I would probably give the book five stars if it had an effective English index. As it is I give it four.

Four Stars

Not what it claims to be
By Patrick
This book was extremely disappointing — for several reasons, but mostly because it is not what it claims to be: As other reviewers have noted, this book is something of a “pattern dictionary,” and is in fact NOT a “comprehensive grammar” as it claims to be. It is also not the best written text I have ever attempted to read, and indeed I could only stomach about 60% of the book. That said, in fairness to the author, who undoubtedly knows quite a bit about Korean, I will enumerate the book’s good points first, before exploding with the bad ones.

The book has the following going for it:
(1) It collates structures according to semantics, which can make selecting a given construction for use to convey a particular meaning easier.
(2) It rates constructions according to the degree to which they resemble spoken or written language, and also as to how common they are. This is valuable information for a learner, and is often not addressed in grammars.
(3) The author does address various nuances pertinent to the constructions she delineates, such as contexts in which they cannot be used, &c.
(4) It looks nice. (Seriously, it’s well organized on the page, which is surprisingly satisfying — and I have read too many grammars that are so ugly to the eye that it is actually distracting and confusing.)

That’s not very many good points, to be sure, but they are there. Now for the negatives.

First of all, I have to get my own petty annoyances out of the way:
(1) The author’s attempts at humor – which are far too frequent – are horribly dull and corny, and though it may simply be my personal preference, I cannot but feel that a “comprehensive grammar” should present itself a bit more professionally and abstain from bad jokes every few paragraphs.
(2) If I had a dollar for every time the author uses the word “expression” – in referring to anything from inflectional or derivational morphemes to phrase-level constituents to entire constructions – I would be filthy rich. Seriously, it’s annoying, and confusingly vague.

Another issue that is not so petty, and that other reviewers have noted, is that the Romanization of the Korean Hangeul is inconsistent and contains a fair number of outright mistakes. She is also inconsistent as to whether she uses the term “descriptive verb” or “adjective” to describe a particular lexical category in Korean; I frankly don’t care which she picks, but I wish that she would stick with one.

On a more serious note, this book claims to be (and I quote from the front cover) “a complete overview of Korean grammar for learners at all levels from beginner to advanced.” Not one thing about this claim is true: This book is not comprehensive, it is not a grammar (at least not one worthy of the name), and it is not for all learners. In fact, the author herself, in the appendix for other Korean learning resources at the back of the book, recommends her own text for only intermediate-level learners, and after reading most of it, I am inclined to agree: Beginners should stay away, and advanced students would probably find it dull. (I myself am a beginner and got nothing from this book.) The book she recommends for advanced learners, Martin’s A Reference Grammar of Korean, is pricier, but is, as she acknowledges, written more for linguists and is therefore a more complete and accurate picture of Korean grammar, for those willing to work with a text of greater technicality and girth.

In fact, though it would seem that she has, the impression I get from this book, being a linguist myself, is that Ms. Kingdon has never read a linguistic text in her life: She makes numerous errors in terminology and explanation that anyone with even a basic grasp of linguistics would not make, for instance (just some of the examples that jumped out at me):
(1) Calling postpositions “ending prepositions” (an oxymoron, as is obvious to anyone with a functional knowledge of English morphology).
(2) Have I mentioned the massive overuse of the word “expression”?
(3) Claiming that “the past tense tells us that something is finished” — no, ma’am, it does not. Past tense means occurring before the time of utterance. Depicting an event as finished is aspect, not tense.
(4) Claiming that the vowel represented by 으 (in IPA, /ɯ/, Romanized variously as u or eu) elides from verb stems on affixation (though the term affix has yet to appear in any of my reading — it’s always “expression”) of the past morpheme “because it’s a weak vowel and easily pushed around by stronger vowel sounds.” No, it is not: There is nothing weak about that vowel. It is perfectly stable in, for instance, Korean’s sister, Japanese. It is simply a quirk of Korean that the vowel elides in that position.
(5) Vast overuse of the term “conjugation” that nearly but doesn’t quite rival that of “expression”: Conjugation refers to inflection of verbs. Ms. Kingdon seems to think that any grammatical construction can be crammed under this term. Pages upon pages in this book are occupied by tables entitled “How it’s conjugated” — and the majority of the time, there is no conjugation present.
There are others, believe me, but these are just ones that I can remember off the top of my head and were particularly annoying or salient.

Of course, I do not necessarily expect Ms. Kingdon to be an out and out linguist. Most language teachers are not. Linguistics can indeed become far more technical than most learners care to know, and I do not expect her to address such issues in a reference grammar. In fact, sometimes the technicality of linguistics is an impediment to learners who are not well-versed in it, and I am willing to accept some tradeoff: For instance, the use of the term “future tense” to refer to a particular morpheme in Korean, while – though I am still new to Korean linguistics in particular, so I cannot be too firm on this – I have read that it is more properly an irrealis mood marker. That said, however, I have read several reference grammars for multiple languages in my day, and I can say that the best were always at least informed by basic linguistic knowledge and structured according to the basic outline of metalinguistics (if not written by out and out linguists): phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics (and occasionally pragmatics added in).

The most damning evidence that Ms. Kingdon is rather linguistically inept is her terming this book a “comprehensive grammar,” which I have said before is completely wrong. Firstly, this book is not a grammar: Ms. Kingdon seems to think that “grammar” means listing a bunch of structures used in the language and giving tidbits of information about how to use them. That is a dictionary. Grammar refers to the rules and principles that govern the use of language by native speakers.

Secondly, this book is far from “comprehensive”: It does not address the phonetics or phonology of Korean AT ALL, both of which are integral parts of grammar. It barely touches on morphology, and while the majority of the book is basically syntax, it nevertheless ignores several important syntactic questions. For instance, not once did I ever see this book mention that the basic word order of Korean is SOV. That’s kinda important to know, especially for a beginner. Likewise, in the field of pragmatics, since the book is written to an English audience and supposedly one which includes beginners, I would think that Ms. Kingdon would explain the nature of Korean as a topic-oriented language, as opposed to a subject-oriented language like English. Also kinda important. No such explanation exists in this book as far as I know.

I could go on, but at this point you get the picture. I apologize if this has been rather desultory — I’m a bit miffed at having paid good money on this book, which to me is now mostly worthless. The bottom line is this: If you are serious about studying Korean grammar, and especially if you are a beginning or advanced learner, this book is a waste of your money. Save up and by Martin’s — I haven’t read it yet, but I’m looking forward to it. Couple that with a good dictionary and some patience and you will learn far more than this book will ever teach you.

I would have given this book two stars because it isn't all that bad as long as you don't believe it to be a "comprehensive grammar," but then Amazon showed me that one star means "I hate it," and I hate this book, so yeah.

Change Your Brain: How Your Habits Cause Anxiety, by Aaron Saunders

Anxiety in the general population is at all time highs and still rising, despite the fact that the use of anti-anxiety medication is also at all-time highs. The ineffectiveness of medication and the current treatment model for mental health issues is a clear problem. This book attempts to bring light to this issue by arguing that the increase in anxiety in the past 20 years is the result of the habits of those affected by anxiety. Although anxiety is a mental health concern, I argue that physical factors in one's environment can alter the balance of neurotransmitters in one's brain through enhanced stimulation, leading to anxiety and other psychological disorders. This book examines the effects of different habits on the brain, including pornography, the internet, one's diet and the role of gluten, and marijuana/other drug use through a review of both anecdotal and scientific evidence. The evidence suggests that the current medical model for treating mental health disorders may be flawed in many instances.

Important reading for anyone with anxiety and their healthcare providers
By Marnia Robinson
Anxiety and the use of anti-anxiety medications are rapidly increasing for adolescents--and medication often does not help. What has changed?

Saunders deftly explains that the past model for treating anxiety will do little to resolve anxiety that is caused by a person's environment. He believes the major culprits today are internet porn, general internet addiction, diet (emphasis on gluten) and use of today's hyper-potent marijuana. He carefully supports his arguments with research relating to each. Says Saunders, "All of these factors can produce significant anxiety in people and can also lead to further issues such as cycles of social avoidance, leading to greater use and worsening of the symptoms."

He correctly points out that if a person's anxiety is caused by one of these factors, neither medication nor behavioral therapy (the current protocols) will address the underlying cause. They merely treat symptoms. Only a change of habits will bring the brain back into balance.

This book is a wake-up call for everyone who isn't yet considering the possibility that disorders like anxiety can be the *result* rather than the *cause* of over-consumption. The take-away message here is that if you suffer from anxiety, you may have another, as yet overlooked, option for easing your distress: Stop and ease your way through any withdrawal symptoms. You just might feel better.

This is a timely message clearly presented. Warning: It isn't a book as such, but rather a clear, carefully documented essay. Nevertheless, it's important reading for anyone with anxiety (and their healthcare providers).

Easy read just needs some more clinical citations
By outdoorguy
Ok needs some clinical citations. It is an easy read, Understanding the basics of diet and social exposure is helpful too. I read it for fun and I am a psychology student and thought it was an easy read. They are some claims that do not cite clinical trials or research. however, it was a fairly good read to get you to think about what we eat. It gets very deep in the weeds on medical terminology. To sum it up: Social media and internet addiction, especially porn, is literally destroying our minds. For your sake and the people you love, insist that the vast majority of your communication be done in person or at least with voice over the phone. And if you watch porn, stop, stop, stop.

A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction (Center for Environmental Structure), by Christopher Alexander, Sara Ishikawa, Murray S

You can use this book to design a house for yourself with your family; you can use it to work with your neighbors to improve your town and neighborhood; you can use it to design an office, or a workshop, or a public building. And you can use it to guide you in the actual process of construction.

After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are now publishing a major statement in the form of three books which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building and planning, which will we hope replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, The Oregon Experiment, and this book, A Pattern Language.

At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation of the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people.

At the core of the books, too, is the point that in designing their environments people always rely on certain "languages," which, like the languages we speak, allow them to articulate and communicate an infinite variety of designs within a forma system which gives them coherence. This book provides a language of this kind. It will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment.

"Patterns," the units of this language, are answers to design problems (How high should a window sill be? How many stories should a building have? How much space in a neighborhood should be devoted to grass and trees?). More than 250 of the patterns in this pattern language are given: each consists of a problem statement, a discussion of the problem with an illustration, and a solution. As the authors say in their introduction, many of the patterns are archetypal, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seemly likely that they will be a part of human nature, and human action, as much in five hundred years as they are today.

Amazon.com Review
The second of three books published by the Center for Environmental Structure to provide a "working alternative to our present ideas about architecture, building, and planning," A Pattern Language offers a practical language for building and planning based on natural considerations. The reader is given an overview of some 250 patterns that are the units of this language, each consisting of a design problem, discussion, illustration, and solution. By understanding recurrent design problems in our environment, readers can identify extant patterns in their own design projects and use these patterns to create a language of their own. Extraordinarily thorough, coherent, and accessible, this book has become a bible for homebuilders, contractors, and developers who care about creating healthy, high-level design.

Review

"A wise old owl of a book, one to curl up with in an inglenook on a rainy day.... Alexander may be the closest thing home design has to a Zen master."--The New York Times

"A classic. A must read!"--T. Colbert, University of Houston

"The design student's bible for relativistic environmental design."--Melinda La Garce, Southern Illinois University

"Brilliant....Here's how to design or redesign any space you're living or working in--from metropolis to room. Consider what you want to happen in the space, and then page through this book. Its radically conservative observations will spark, enhance, organize your best ideas, and a wondrous home, workplace, town will result."--San Francisco Chronicle

"The most important book in architecture and planning for many decades, a landmark whose clarity and humanity give hope that our private and public spaces can yet be made gracefully habitable."--The Next Whole Earth Catalog

This book changed the way I look at buildings ... and life!
By James DeRossitt
My fascination with Christopher Alexander's work began with "The Timeless Way of Building," but increased tenfold upon discovering his inexhaustible classic, "A Pattern Language." At over a thousand pages (I think,) "A Pattern Language" is an encyclopedic study of what makes buildings, streets, and communities work -- indeed, what makes environments human.
Alexander and his co-authors present us with over two hundred (roughly 250) "patterns" that they believe must be present in order for an environment to be pleasing, comfortable, or in their words, "alive." The patterns start at the most general level -- the first pattern, "Independent Regions," describes the ideal political entity, while another of my favorite patterns, "Mosaic of Subcultures," described the proper distribution of different groups within a city. The patterns gradually become more specific -- you'll read arguments about how universities should relate to the community, the proper placement of parks, the role of cafes in a city's life. If you wonder about the best design for a home, the authors will describe everything from how roofs and walls should be built, down to how light should fall within the home, where your windows should be placed, and even the most pleasant variety of chairs in the home. An underlying theme of all the patterns is that architecture, at its best, can be used to foster meaningful human interaction, and the authors urge us to be aware of how the houses we build can help us balance needs for intimacy and privacy.
They admit that they are uncertain about some of the patterns -- they indicate their degree of certainty using a code of asterisks placed before the pattern. For each pattern, the authors summarize the pattern in a brief statement printed in boldface, and then describe it at length, drawing upon a variety of sources to give us a full sense of what they mean: these "supporting sources" include an excerpt from a Samuel Beckett novel, papers in scholarly journals, newspaper clippings, etc. Most patterns are accompanied by a photograph (many of them beautiful and fascinating in their own right) and all are illustrated by small, casual hand-drawings. Taken together, "A Pattern Language" is an extraordinarily rich text, visually and conceptually.
As I said in the header of this review, "A Pattern Language" has changed the way I look at buildings and neighborhoods -- I feel like this book has made me attuned to what works, and what doesn't work, in the human environment. I'm constantly realizing things about buildings and streets that this book helped me see -- things that make people feel at home, or feel "alive," in their surroundings, or conversely, things that make people uncomfortable. And the book makes me think differently about life because it showed me how our well-being depends so much upon the way our buildings fit, or don't fit, us as UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS.

it isn't about architecture
By Philip Greenspun
Nominally about architecture and urban planning, this book has more wisdom about psychology, anthropology, and sociology than any other that I've read. Nearly every one of this volume's 1170 pages will make you question an assumption that you probably didn't realize you were making. In a section entitled "Four-Story Limit", Alexander notes that "there is abundant evidence to show that high buildings make people crazy." Underneath is a photo of San Franisco's Transamerica tower, captioned with a quote from Orwell's 1984:
"The Ministry of Truth--Minitrue, in Newspeak--was startlingly different from any other object in sight. It was an enormous pyramidal structure of glittering white concrete, soaring up terrace after terrace 300 metres in the air."
Alexander backs up this polemic with convincing arguments that high-rise living removes people too far from the casual society of the street, from children playing in the yard, and that apartment-dwellers therefore become isolated.
Alexander spends a lot of time in this book trying to figure out how to restore the damage to our communities that have been done by automobiles. He argues for better public spaces and for more integration of children, old people, and workers. He argues for more access to water by more people.
Many of Alexander's arguments are against the scale of modern systems. Public schools spend a fortune on building and administration precisely because they are so physically large [I've seen statistics showing that our cities spend only about one-third of their budgets on classrooms and teachers]. If we had shopfront schools and fired all the school system personnel who don't teach, we might be able to get student-teacher ratios down to 8 or 10:1 without an increase in cost. Similarly, Alexander argues for smaller retail shops, smaller factories (or at least identifiable small workgroups within factories rather than hundreds of faceless cogs) and more master/apprentice instruction.
What if you like the depredations of modernity and aren't interested in a utopian world where basic human needs are met? Can you learn anything about architecture from this guy? Absolutely. You'll learn that light is everything. Your bedroom has to have eastern light so that the sun wakes you up. Your best living quarters should have southern light. All the rooms should have light from at least two sides, otherwise there will be too much contrast and you'll just have to draw the shades. If you've got kids, make them sleep and play in their own wing of the house. Build a realm for yourself and your wife on a different floor. Meet the kids in the kitchen.
To avoid cluttering my apartment, I give away virtually all the books that I buy these days. I'm keeping this one and plan to re-read it every year.

zen and the art of architecture
By audrey frances
I've read all three books in this series, and I thought this was by far the best and most accessible. The first, "A Timeless Way of Building", introduced the author's philosophy and was, I thought, a bit bogged down with New Age jargon. I prefer to think in terms of comfort and relationships, though ultimately I agree with just about everything the author-as-designer states and obviously went on to read his other work. I thought the third book, photographs of a project completed by the author, should have been the most informative, but ultimately didn't do justice to the author's ideas. But maybe it was just the poor quality of the pictures. IMHO this is the masterpiece of the trilogy. Its concern is the practical application of the author's ideas, and one could only wish to live or work in a space designed with this philosophy. His thinking is pragmatic AND beautiful, bringing balance and harmony to space.

Having made the case for his system of architectural and social design in his earlier work, the author here goes on to formalize a system of 253 patterns, ranging in scale from towns down to benches. Patterns 1 through 94 define a town or community; numbers 95 through 204 define (groups of) buildings; and numbers 205-253 define a "buildable building". The individual patterns are themselves evocative and inviting, and cover a myriad of human social and environmental relationships: number 1 is Independent Region, pattern 2 is Distribution of Towns, 10 is Magic of the City, 57 is Children in the City, number 62 is High Places, number 63 Dancing in the Street, 94 is Sleeping in Public, 203 Child Caves, 223 Deep Reveals, 235 Soft Inside Walls, 253 Things from Your Life.

One example of developing the pattern language for a specific project using a subset of the author's Pattern Language is that of the front porch, composed of 10 elements: private terrace on street, sunny place, six-foot balcony, outdoor room, paths & goals, ceiling height variety, columns at the corners, front-door bench, raised flowers and different chairs. Alexander gives many such examples and eloquently details the process of exploring patterns and moving between them in a search for the proper set. And that is one thing that makes this book special and fun. He does not say a 'successful' set of elements but a 'proper' set of elements. At first that might seem like a lot of hot hubris, but on reading you find that there is a reason that a balcony should be 6-feet square .... THAT is the minimum space required for people to have a comfortable discussion around a small table. It is a charming and useful way to look at one's surroundings, and each of the 253 patterns is given the treatment as the author goes on to detail each element's specifications, definition and purpose.

These expanded definitions are often quite charming; for instance, under pattern 57, Children in the City, he specifies a very safe bike path that meanders past workplaces and shops with windows so that kids can see the diversity and alive-ness of the place in which they live. Lovely idea.

While others have noted that Alexander's ideas inspired changes in software engineering, I would also like to note that the author's ideas were, in turn, most likely informed by others, such as neuroscientist Karl Lashley and, in particular, linguist Noam Chomsky. Chomsky developed the idea of a generative grammar, composed of constituent symbols, a set of rules and a set of terminal elements, which together describe all possible sentences in a language. This was considered revolutionary at the time and is quite similar to Alexander's characterization of his patterns, described as a context combined with a system of forces or rules generating an infinite number of solutions in the form of sets of specific design elements. That configuration, in turn, becomes the context for another pattern. The theory's dynamism and scalability render it very powerful indeed.

I think another interesting approach to this philosophy would be to reverse engineer our own environment. To say, Obviously there is a Pattern Language at work in the larger world in which we live, and it is decidedly in opposition to what Mr. Alexander and others, including myself, believe is preferred. What are the rules of that language? What is the context within which those elements operate? The author codifies a desirable Pattern Language. I'd like to see his principles used to turn an eye toward decodifying our own milieu. This is the kind of book that leads one to think and imagine, and isn't that a wonderful thing?

What I didn't like about this book were that neither ideas nor photographs were credited, which is frustrating for someone who wants to follow up on these ideas, and not fair to those whose work contributed to the author's. The author apologized for this in his first book, but then repeated the discourtesy here; the second time is less forgivable. Also, there is no index, which is especially painful for a librarian :-) I would have liked to have seen a more diverse selection of examples, and some attempt to address the implementation of a pattern language after more conventional designs are already in place. That said, I agree with the many others who have stated that this book changed the way they looked at their surroundings, and I'm profoundly grateful to the author for his work, which stands up well after a quarter century.

Even when mediocrity (or worse) is the order of the day, there are those voices in the wilderness who speak to a better understanding and envision a better world. In codifying an aesthetic relationship among elements of a viable, living environment and describing a system of scalable self-sustaining systems, the author joins visionaries like R. Buckminster Fuller, who bring a philosophy to architecture that is as much about living as it is about building. I would encourage anyone who is interested in architecture, design, a philosophy of organic wholeness, or creating a more humane environment, to read this informative and provocative book.

Book arrived in timely fashion. I am a voracious reader and use various
guide in ordering books from Amazon (e.g., Entertainment Weekly, websites with a
book review segment).
I have not at this point had time to read this but the book is in good shape
as described, no tears, cover intact.
Will donate to library once I read it.
