Great book

I like this book because it has clear explanations, easy to follow examples, quick review tests and answers. This book is a complete package in terms of learning data structures with Java. if you follow it from beginning to the end, do the exercises and some projects you will have a solid foundation to move to more complex topics and projects. As with any programming book, you get what you put in, so read and code. Some topics may seem too easy and there is a temptation to just skip them, resist the temptation and follow the structure. Then do some projects at the end of each section. Some readers say it's too spread out and easy, yet they fail to complete the projects. Small projects indicate how well you can apply the knowledge, so do them and maybe even expand on them and your success is guaranteed.

systematic learning

Michael Main takes a systematic approach to present a (possibly) daunting topic. As an avid reader of technical books, I have seen the full spectrum: from books that aren't worth the paper that they are printed on to books that you want to keep around because they are so good. This book definitely falls into the later category. Main has a incredible aptitude for making the abstract into the understandable. The readers comprehension of each new concept is solidified by it's methodical presentation. This book is worth every cent and more.

A very clear explanation of Java Data Structures

I have read other books on Java and data structures and so far this book seems to be the best in terms of its clarity. The author really seems to go out of his way to make the concepts clear. The figures, code samples, and even the overall structure and flow of the book help to make it a useful and helpful text.

Passed on first try

I've been in IT for about 10 years and decided that the ITIL exam was the next logical next step in my career. A lot of people have said the material is easy and you don't need much time to study for it, however, I wanted to take my time with this since I wanted to really learn the material and not just cram to pass a test. I passed the test on my first try about a month after starting the book. I took the pre-assessment which I failed miserably and then read every chapter highlighting important points and completing the end of chapter questions at the end of each chapter. I then reviewed the highlighted material and re-read all the exam essential information at the end of each chapter. I then took the two practice tests at the end of the book and passed the test with a 93% (got three questions wrong). Below are the pros and cons of the book.

Pros:

It prepares you for what is going to be on the exam. This book is all you need to pass the test.

It easy to read with minimal typos and does a good job of covering the material that will be on the test.

The practice exams at the end of the book are very accurate on what the test is going to be like. They are gold.

Cons:

There aren't enough examples of the concepts they cover and the ones that are there are not very good.

There aren't enough visuals to reinforce the examples being explained.

The end of the chapter questions are not a good representation on what the test questions will be like. If you don't take several practice exams before the real test you will fail.

Solid study material

I was out of work for a little over 6 months earlier this year and kept seeing "ITIL" pop up as a requirement for jobs I was looking at. I already have several technical certifications and decided to try and acquire this one as well so I picked up this book. After studying for about 2 weeks I took the test and passed with an 89%. If you're looking for a solid study guide this book is a great option. The material is presented in a straightforward manner and the chapters are kept concise enough to keep your attention from lapsing. For those looking to get into an entry level IT/help desk job I'd definitely recommend this book and going for the ITIL Foundation cert (at $150 it's less expensive than most Comptia and MS exams) as more and more companies are starting to adopt these standards.

More useful as an extra guide

Disclaimer: I passed my ITIL Foundation Exam with a 92%. However, this book was only a small part of the reason why.

I'm mildly disappointed with the book. Far too much detail gets spent on explaining the concepts beyond what is necessary for the Foundation level and a lot of subjects were introduced that aren't even needed until higher levels. The real world examples, while interesting, don't really add that much benefit to studying. The online material was helpful for review, although there was one question where the answers were for another question. The lack of a glossary at the back was a strange omission; you can get a copy of it online, why not include it in the physical book as well?

All in all, it's average as a study guide but may come in handy if you choose to pursue a higher level of ITIL certification. If you use it as your only guide, you may be struggling through the exam.

Will Surely Enhance Your Elder Scrolls Experience

This is a great selection of IN-GAME texts beautifully collected, bound and arranged to help immerse yourself in the lore of the land, provinces and alliances available in the video game The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited. Nearly each story is accompanied by beautiful conceptual and original artwork to help deepen your understanding of the text. This is a first in a series of books exploring the lore of the Elder Scrolls Universe. If you are an Elder Scrolls fan, this book is sure to enhance your understanding of Tamriel.

Cons:
- Kinda Pricey
- I might have picked a slightly different font
- No new lore. All material can be found and read in-game.

Great book for fans

The presentation is beautiful. It's a hardcover with a surface that's almost velvety with a nice emboss design. If you happen to have the Diablo III companions on the folklore, such as The Book of Cain or The Book of Tyrael, this is almost like those in terms of presentation. The pages are designed like old parchment with yellow pages and mould stains.

The content are actually text from the game. You might find the text online as well through sources such as Wikia but that would be troublesome to go through compared to them all collected neatly in this book.

The text are stories and lore from various inhabitants of Tamriel, from all the three warring factions, Aldmeri Dominion, Daggerfall Convenant and Ebonheart. There's also a section with several chapters on creatures.

For every spread, there's either one or two pieces of beautiful artworks that decorate the blocks of text.

It's a great book for fans of Elder Scrolls Online. The only downside is the peculiar choice of font used that affects the legibility.

Interesting and artistically beautiful, not entirely what I expected

For fans of the Elder Scrolls online, this is a must-have gaming supplement.

It's not exactly what I expected.

I thought that it was going to be a guide to the land. Silly me. What it is instead is a series of anecdotes and tales as told by inhabitants of Tamriel.

The book itself is a work of artistry. It has a heavy duty binding, and pages that are faux aged. It is lavishly illustrated, and many pages have small hand-drawn illustrations and illegible ink-ings that add to the feeling that this is a collection of stories or perhaps a personal journal.

The one thing that it is lacking is maps. I was really expecting there to be maps. Even a collection of stories might've had a hand-drawn map or two tucked into it.

Also, truth in lending, while I highly recommend this book. If you're expecting there to be secrets revealed in it, think again. Everything in this book that I read is available in other sources. Sorry! No dark secrets are revealed.

Again if you are a fan of the Elder Scrolls, I highly recommend this book.

I cannot say enough good things about Peter Walsh, and his ability to change my thinking - seriously shifting my brain to realize I do not need all this STUFF. I feel free for the first in my life of the hold that things, mementos, clutter, had on me. I am mid-stream in my down-sizing, was never a hoarder, but even people with neat and tidy homes have too much stuff. When I cleaned out my front coat closet, for instance, I had 16 pair of gloves. Various materials, bought at different times, on trips when I had forgotten to pack them or we got a sudden cold snap. Now, after donating, 14 people will have gloves. I did the same with mufflers, hats, and coats. It feels good. In my wardrobe, I had so many duplicates: for instance FIVE black turtleneck sweaters, as just one example. My core wardrobe is much leaner now, looks fantastic, easy to pack and unpack and wash. Before I had so many clothes and way too many choices and I would get overwhelmed by what to take. I am an author and I travel around the globe - (I write a thriller series about a globe trotting archaeologist so my books are set everywhere). I needed easy choices, but still need to be professionally clothed. Peter has completely taught this old dog new tricks. I love his books.

Just What I Needed

I had been feeling depressed at the "stuff" all around me, I didn't know how to start. My mother living with me is wonderful, but it's hard to part with things that were hers, or she gave to me, or "were" still useful. This had made me purge my stuff and let me wait for a better time for other things that belong to her. My children are getting asked what they want that we have stored for them AND having them decide what they want that belongs to us. A garage sale with donations to follow is in our near future. Peter is amazing, I couldn't go through this without his wisdom and direction. Bless him for his help through this book!

A timely book!

I pre-ordered this book and received it on Feb. 14th, the day it first was available. I read it over the next few days, and learned how to handle going through a loved one's possessions after their death. My mother was put on hospice care at the beginning of the month and I knew the info in Peter's book would eventually be needed. Two days after I finished the book, on Feb. 22nd, my mom passed away! I found myself quoting from the book as my sisters and daughters and I went through Mom's apartment and decided what to keep and what to let go!
An idea that we had turned out to be helpful too: after the memorial service, at my sister's house for the family get-together and dinner, she set up a "Grandma Shoppe" in the basement with the things we had kept, and had the whole family go downstairs and choose things they wanted for their own homes and as mementos, and things that had personal meaning for each one. It worked out very well, and everyone was happy.

About the Author

Dr. Alex Blewitt

Dr Alex Blewitt has been developing Java applications since Version 1.0 was released in 1996, and has been using the Eclipse platform since its first release as part of the IBM WebSphere Studio product suite. He even migrated some plugins from Visual Age for Java to WebSphere Studio/Eclipse as part of his PhD on Automated Verification of Design Patterns. He got involved in the open source community as a tester when Eclipse 2.1 was being released for Mac OS X, and then subsequently as an editor for EclipseZone, including being a finalist for Eclipse Ambassador in 2007.

More recently, Alex has been writing for InfoQ, covering generic Java and specifically, Eclipse and OSGi subjects. He keynoted the 2011 OSGi Community Event on the past, present, and future of OSGi. The coverage of both new releases of the Eclipse platform and its projects, as well as video interviews with some of the Eclipse project leads can be found via the InfoQ home page, for which he was nominated and won the Eclipse Top Contributor 2012 award.

Alex currently works for an investment bank in London. He also has a number of apps on the Apple AppStore through Bandlem Limited. When he's not working on technology, and if the weather is nice, he likes to go flying from the nearby Cranfield airport.

Very Narrow Examples, Very Poor Index

I have found this book to be almost useless. I am a very experienced Java (and Android) developer. I spend a lot of time learning from books when I undertake new technologies. I never wrote an Eclipse plug-in before, and I thought this book would help. The book title, "...Development by Example" suggests it gives lots of examples.

Unfortunately, the method of the book is to take a single plug-in project and show how it is developed. All of the examples are the step-by-step development of that one project. This, alone, is not a problem. However, the example is pretty far off the main-stream, and the author doesn't seem to think beyond this one example.

The single most valuable resource in any book which will be used a reference is a thorough index. The index (or the book) is terribly incomplete, which makes it more-or-less useless as a reference. There is no excuse for this as an incomplete index just indicates laziness on the part of the author. When questions arise during the course of developing the plug-in I'm working on, I have yet to find an answer in this book--because of the poor index

This book might be valuable if one were to devote the time necessary to work through it from beginning to end, but I would not purchase this book (especially given the price) unless you intend to do so.

The book also fails to direct readers to other resources (e.g. wiki.eclipse.org, which a great resource).

The best of the Eclipse plugin development guides.

This book is the best of the Eclipse plug-in development guides I have encountered (and I think I have seen just about all of them). Dr. Blewitt not only presents the material in a clear and logical progression, but also explains the importance of each development action. Even more impressive, in my opinion, is his uncanny ability to anticipate the questions you will have and provide both answers and explanations. A must-have book for anyone doing Eclipse development, whether you are focusing on 3.x or 4.x.

Very good book

I'm French, sorry for my bad English: the author knows in depth concepts (SWT, JFace, E4) and avoids to illustrate the explanations with too many copies of screen for creating plugins. I recommend this book!
