The Religion of Ancient Egypt (Cambridge Library Collection - Egyptology), by William Matthew Flinders Petrie

A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) excavated over fifty sites and trained a generation of archaeologists. In this concise 1912 publication, aimed at non-specialists, Petrie discusses the key aspects of ancient Egyptian religion and the philosophies that underpinned it. Beginning with an explanation of the ancient conception of deities, the text explores the various types of god in the Egyptian pantheon and the ancient theory of the afterlife. It also gives due attention to such structures of belief as ritual, priesthood and scripture. The book ends with an examination of the ways in which ancient Egyptian religion spread through the ancient world and how Egyptian ideas were reused and transformed by later religions, including Christianity. Petrie wrote prolifically throughout his long career, and a great many of his other publications - for both specialists and non-specialists - are also reissued in this series.

About the Author
Professor Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie FRS (3 June 1853 - 28 July 1942), known as Flinders Petrie, was an English Egyptologist and a pioneer of systematic methodology in archaeology. He held the first chair of Egyptology in the United Kingdom, and excavated at many of the most important archaeological sites in Egypt, such as Naukratis, Tanis, Abydos and Amarna. Some consider his most famous discovery to be that of the Merneptah Stele, an opinion with which Petrie himself concurred.

Egyptology From the Pen of a Master.
By Ronald E. Parsons
Ancient Egyptian Religion is a massive subject best broached during one's youth. Its development, practices and decline took place over a span of at least 3000 years. Its gods were many. Their mythical areas of 'responsibility' evolved and changed over the millennia. The religion expired long enough ago for its language (expressed in hieroglyphics) to have been forgotten until early in the 19th century after the Rosetta stone was discovered. As a result of the above-stated there is much to be studied.

Author Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie was an early, self-taught Egyptologist whose investigations and writings spanned part of the 19th into the 20th century. His little book of 98 pp., , was resurrected and reprinted by publisher . My copy is dated Sept. 12, 2011.

This book by Petrie remains a fine, brief and well-written route into the study of Egyptian religion which constituted a major part of ancient Egyptian culture. I strongly recommend it to readers of any age who wish to look into the subject.

Oldie but Goody

I got the Kindle edition which is quite readable with a few typos/oddities (for example ThMth for the god normally given as Thoth). Not sure how they got there. Since this is from the turn of the last century, it is clearly not based on the most recent scholarship. Nevertheless, it is very interesting and he has some plausible theories of how some of these theologies came to be. He respects the fuzziness of myth and the vast time period involved. He sees the concepts as changing with place and the people who are in power, merging and blending over time. Language is definitely introductory with little jargon.

I'm not an expert in this area, but have done some reading in mythology. He had some ideas that made me think and see things in a new way. I liked his theory of how the animal and human forms related. I think this would be best for someone like me with some background in mythology looking at how our ideas about mythology developed. If you want an introductory text, I would get something more modern that reflects our advances in knowledge.

early scholarship
By doc peterson
Petrie is a giant figure in Egyptology - he was among the first to begin a serious, systematic study of pre-Roman Egypt. Because of this, _The Religion of Ancient Egypt_ is an attractive read (always helpful to get a sense of historiography) while very much showing its age. In reading it, one must keep in mind the scholarship is over 100 years old: it is no longer acceptable for scholars to refer to ancient beliefs as "barbaric," for example. Similarly, Petrie's theory that Egypitan cosmology originated as monotheism before expanding into polytheism seems quaint in light of more recent scholarship. (See Ancient Egyptain Religion or Religion and Ritual in Ancient Egypt.) Nonetheless, it is fascinating to see a discipline in its formative stages, as Petrie seeks to piece together not only a very complex cosmology (the Egyptian creation story, for example, has three stages of the universe's evolution before man is created), but also the rituals, details of the priesthood, and the nature of private worship.
