I enjoyed reading this book on a subject that most people dread, public speaking. The book was well organized and provided a lot of practical knowledge and examples. Any business leader could use this refresher in the finer points of public speaking.

Mobilize Your Body and Voice to Efficiently Deliver Compelling Content

Sandy Linver clearly articulates what it takes to deliver content with style in "Speak and Get Results." Linver does not believe in born speakers who excel at public speaking without any practice whatsoever.

Linver reviews the importance in choosing an appropriate message to bring the listeners where a speaker wants them to be. Linver correctly points out that too many speakers assume that their listeners be as interested in or as committed to their subject as they are or that they see it from the same perspective they do. In other words, some speakers try to accomplish too much for their audience with a single communication. Linver also briefly touches on visuals. This section is probably not of much use for readers who look at more than the basics for developing compelling visuals.

Linver then reviews in detail the three basic qualities of effectively speaking in public:

1) Authority: Speaker has to look and sound as if he knows what he is talking about,

2) Energy: Speaker has to give the impression that what he says matters to him,

3) Audience Awareness: Speaker must see and respond to his audience.

Authority, energy, and audience awareness mainly come into play through the speaker's command of his body and voice. Moving the feet apart and establishing a firm base, leaning forward to the audience, and taking the time to pause and breathe are some of the techniques that Linver covers.

A humbling and enriching experience is to be videotaped while speaking to an audience and then to review the delivery. Readers will often be surprised about what they will see about themselves. Effectively speaking in public cannot be achieved without nurturing and developing the skills reviewed in this book.

About the Author
Moh Hardin is an acharya, or senior teacher, in the Shambhala Buddhist lineage. The son of a Methodist minister, he graduated from Duke University with a BA in music. He lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and teaches Buddhism and meditation frequently in Canada and the United States.

Lots of good here, overall

This is a warm and lovely book, slim and pocket-sized. The author, a longtimeBuddhist meditation instructor, discusses basic Buddhist concepts in a friendly and accessible way. I was particularly impressed by the various exercises he presents - I found that they cast a warm glow, surprisingly long-lasting, over the day.

I must admit that on first reading, I was a little perplexed by some of the definitions the author presents:: for example, patience having something to do with "not resisting what is," and self-discipline having something to do with "taking one's seat," and "feeling the earth." These definitions may work for some people, but it seems to me that at times, stronger words are necessary. After reading the words of the Dalai Lama on love and positive emotions, certain parts of this book feel a little New Age-y and loose.

Still, I have found myself drawn back to this book repeatedly because of its warm glow and tender, intimate tone, and as for those definitions, it's worth giving them some more thought.

A Different Path to Happiness

Moe Hardin sees a path to universal happiness and asks us to join him on the journey.
If, as Hardin claims, love is a journey outward that begins with me, I should get started.

The focus of this book is clearly grounded in psychology and spirituality. Hardin refers to the path many take of seeking happiness in materialism - in possessions and wealth. He convinces me that such a path tends not to bring happiness. Instead, as I gather more wealth, I keep wishing for more and it is never enough.

Hardin presents a different way to achieve the happiness we all seek. He contends that lasting happiness is found in being comfortable with yourself and others. Hardin believes that if I wish that my children be happy, my happiness increases. If I wish that everyone be happy, then my personal contentment multiplies many fold.

Some of his points:
To love, start with yourself - learn to accept yourself, like yourself, and seek your own happiness. Then grow your happiness by wishing the happiness of your family. Learn to wish the happiness of all living beings. Our wishes lead our behavior. To help us on our journey, Hardin gives us tools.

At first glance the ideas in this little book seem to be "common sense" and simple.- they are not. The principles in this book may take me my entire life to achieve. A Little Book of Love is not like the typical self help book. It is rich in practicality and wisdom. Although it appears short (142 pages) it is not a book one simply reads. Rather it is a book that one needs to pause frequently, meditate, and follow its guidance. I highly recommend this book for those seeking spiritual growth.

A Basic Book About Love - From a Buddhist Perspective

This is an interesting little book, full of basic, yet profound wisdom from the Buddhist tradition. It is short and easy to read, and reads a lot like a Christian devotional book. Hardin's style is down-to-earth and his ideas are clear, even to those like myself that aren't Buddhist.

This book is all about love, as a Buddhist defines the term. It is divided into two main sections, "Starting at Home," about loving yourself and your family, and "Thinking Bigger," about loving everything else. The first chapter is about becoming friends with yourself, a concept that resonated with me, since I have rarely thought about my relationship with myself. Most of us tend to be much harder on ourselves, and less forgiving of our own mistakes, than we are of others. Another insight is that we need to give "space" to our families and friends. By this, Hardin doesn't what you think; it is not about making yourself scarce. What he means is that when we know somebody well, we tend to think we have them figured out, and we react a certain way to them. For example, you may be used to a nagging wife or an emotionally distant husband, so you always react (negatively) to them based on this. The reality is that if you stepped back, you would realize that there are other ways to deal with them, and they with you. There are other useful nuggets of wisdom in this book, and it is highly practical, since the theoretical concepts are paired with easy and helpful exercises.

As I mentioned previously, this book reminds me of a Christian devotional book. As such, it is meant to provide some helpful observations and tools to enhance your life. This book is not intended to be an exhaustive primer on love, or Buddhism in general. Keeping it in this context, it is an excellent book that introduces basic Buddhist concepts such as mindful meditation, bodhichitta (having an open mind/heart), bodhisattva (awake being), the four limitless ones (love, compassion, joy, equanimity), among others. It is not an exhaustive coverage of these topics, but a basic introduction focused on applying these topics in your everyday life. Overall, even as a Christian, I enjoyed this book, as both a good primer on love, and an introduction to Buddhist practices and concepts.

He has more than a dozen years of experience teaching programming and computer science to students of all levels. He has a Ph.D. in artificial intelligence and is still looking for ways to apply it to his robotic vacuum. When he is not teaching Python, he likes to juggle anything he can get his hands on.

Informative, but not for the beginner

I've been hearing a lot about Python, its excellent syntax, and myriad of uses, so I decided to look for something to introduce me to the language. I ended up picking up Python: Visual QuickStart Guide because it's a light read and comes at a bargain bin price.

The book is written from the perspective that you're a complete beginner at Python. However, this tone makes a lot less sense as you go through the book; the book's examples seem to exist purely to demonstrate how the language's syntax looks. Indeed, there is very little practical application of anything you will learn from this book. It goes into minimal detail, and often what explanation it does offer is useless.

On the plus side, it is one of the first books on the shelves for Python 3. Anyone looking for a quick way to get up to date on Python 3 won't be disappointed. There's even a handy appendix highlighting the differences between Python 2 and Python 3. However, anyone just beginning Python who is looking for a comprehensive walkthrough of the language is going to be disappointed by this book. It amounts to little more than a syntax reference. I've read this book all the way through, and while I understand most of the language's syntax, I still have zero ability to build a Python application for any use. Many of the more in-depth features the book only mentions briefly, and usually only to tell you to check the official Python documentation online for more information, which to the beginner is absolutely useless since the official docs are highly technical and oriented toward a developer.

If you're looking for a book that's going to walk you through Python step by step, this is not your book. Not only is it about 180-pages light, but the text only takes up about half the page for some reason and it's a small sized book. There's less content in 180-pages of this book than there is in the first 60 of other programming books I own. It's a quick read and a great way to get started with Python and its basic syntax. However, taking your abilities further is best left to other, more complete books.

Clean graphic design and simplicity are its strengths

Thin, efficient, professionally designed, and concise guide for Python. Its a simple book but informative book for beginners. It often uses only one basic example per topic, but I prefer that to examples of odd cases which are rarely an issue. I would probably start with an absolute beginners guide or python programming by John Zelle for a book that gives more background and context to supplement this book. Not Useful for NEWBIES

I'm new to Python, with only limited experience in programing, but it is apparent to me this is a very poor introduction to the language. The other reviewers are obviously more experienced and therefore were not as blindsided by the numerous typos that cause many of the given scripts to not run. Mostly simple mistakes, but clearly shows the lack of editing. The lack of detail on important aspects like environment parameters and general sloppy (of course everyone knows you need to import os, sys before you use the 'os.getcwd() command) writing left me feeling I wasted my money AND time on book. Hope this is not indicative of other Peachpit Press products.

Maybe there is an audience for this book but I'd recommend beginners give it a miss.
