Caravaggio: A Life, by Helen Langdon

A powerful and illuminating biography-the first in English in two generations-of one of the most popular painters of all time.

Of all the great Italian painters, the seventeenth-century master Caravaggio speaks most clearly and powerfully to our time. His early paintings of cardsharps, musicians, and street vendors convey his fascination with the Roman demimonde; his stark and brilliant religious paintings convey the world of the poor and the outcast and the religious experience of the individual with a directness our age can recognize.

Caravaggio lived hard and died young, having fled Rome for Sicily, apparently after murdering another man in a dispute; his life is one of the most colorful of any artist's. In this vivid and beautifully written biography, Helen Langdon tells the story of the great painter's life and times in a way that leaves the reader with a renewed appreciation of his art.

Caravaggio painted a fairly small number of works, many of them for settings in Rome, Naples, and Sicily, where they remain today; and he painted directly from human models. So the story of his life and times reveals Italian society of the period-involving powerful patrons, sybaritic cardinals, and saints, as well as street boys, prostitutes, and rivalrous painters.

Langdon has spent a lifetime studying Caravaggio; this biography, the first in English in two generations, shows us Caravaggio's genius with the striking clarity of his own paintings.

Amazon.com Review
Seventeenth-century painter Nicolas Poussin once said that Caravaggio came into the world to destroy painting. Helen Langdon's marvelous biography suggests that rather than destroying painting, the Milanese artist gave it a new lease on life. Upon his arrival in Rome, Caravaggio ended a tradition of Italian Renaissance painting with his radically new naturalistic style, which continues to dazzle and influence viewers today. Beautifully poised between biographical scholarship and artistic appreciation, Langdon's book provides the reader with a complex, fascinating portrait of Caravaggio, still the rebel and outsider of the popular imagination, but also immersed in the Roman world of art, politics, and patronage. Some of the finest sections of the book vividly evoke the streets and brothels of early 17th-century Rome, which provided Caravaggio with the inspiration for many of his early works. By contrast, the later sections--which deal with Caravaggio's exile and commissions in Naples, Malta, and Sicily--seem rather brief and truncated, giving the final third of the book a rather unbalanced feel. This is, however, partly due to the elusiveness of Caravaggio himself--with little direct contemporary documentation on the painter, he often slips into the shadows, evading the scrutiny of even the most persistent biographer.

Langdon's achievement here is to produce a compelling portrait of the artist that throws new light on his paintings. Here is a painter who was proud, difficult, and arrogant, yet highly intellectual in his appreciation of the changing face of both Catholicism and scientific enquiry. Written with great historical clarity, and supplemented by 42 magnificent color illustrations, Helen Langdon's Caravaggio is a worthy contribution to scholarly study of this artist. --Jerry Brotton

From Publishers Weekly
At once more scholarly and less polemical than Desmond Seward's 1998 Caravaggio: A Passionate Life, Langdon's study of the Renaissance painter conveys a picture of Michelangelo da Caravaggio (1573-1610) as an artist amid rivals and intrigues without losing sight of his work and its significance. Not that Langdon downplays the juicy bits: she offers documented details on the scandals and rivalries, but does so without sensationalism or dependence on conjecture. While Seward railed against homoerotic interpretations of Caravaggio's works, and seemed particularly hostile to Derek Jarman's highly speculative 1987 film, Caravaggio, Langdon is unfailingly even-handed. In keeping with her focus on Caravaggio the artist (as opposed to Seward's man of faith), Langdon presents the relationship with Cardinal Francesco del Monte, for whom he served as artist-in-residence, in terms of career significance rather than personal relationships. Through del Monte, Caravaggio made contacts with church officials and patrons, and also with other painters, many of whom became rivals or detractors. The last section of the book is a balanced account of Caravaggio's induction into the Catholic order of the Knights of Malta (an honor seemingly requiring him to have lied about his family's lineage), his imprisonment in a Maltese dungeon for dueling with a Knight of higher rank and his legendary escape. Without downplaying Caravaggio's personal oddity and violent tendencies, Langdon approaches her subject with a sympathetic yet almost clinical eye. She scours the archives, examining police documents and bringing court records to light. In the end, she produces a finished view of an artist who helped redefine realism in art, even as his increasingly humbling depictions of people alienated him from painters and patrons, and fed his public image as a scoundrel and madman. 56 b&w illustrations, 42 color plates. From Library Journal
British scholar Langdon's masterly achievement is to integrate Caravaggio's art and life in a convincing and vividly delineated re-creation of his world. The themes of artistic patronage and practice, politics, religion, and criminality are effectively woven together to illumine the artist's work and behavior. Not only has Langdon synthesized an unprecedented amount of material to evoke the world within which Caravaggio labored but she has simultaneously created a freshened and deepened appreciation of his paintings. While occasionally venturing a bit far afield in the pursuit of a more fully rounded picture of his social milieu, she never fails the works themselves. Even readers already immersed in Caravaggio scholarship cannot fail to savor this brilliant conjunction of the formal and iconographic with the contextual, intellectual, spiritual, and social preoccupations of the moment. No previous English language work has so compellingly situated this artist in the ethos of his epoch. Art collections beyond the elementary level will need to acquire this informed, insightful, and eloquent opus.ARobert Cahn, Fashion Inst. of Technology, New York

As clear a portrait as we can hope for, currently...
By Stopheles
Langdon's research payed off in this beautiful look at one of the Late Renaissance's most powerful (and mysterious, and notorious) painters. Sadly, most of what we know of Michelangelo Caravaggio's life is through second-hand sources -- police records and such -- but Langdon seems to have pored through every bit of esoterica related to the painter's relation to his time, his culture, and his peers. What we get for her troubles is a portrait of a man whose devotion to religion was so strong that he would do anything -- including lying about his lineage -- to maintain a secure place as a "defender of the faith."
Sadly, the one-star review on this page has a point: many of Langdon's statements are qualified with "perhaps", "almost certainly," etc. This, however, is one of the prices we pay for any attempt to pin down an elusive person who lived on the fringes of a society which passed four hundred years ago. I much preferred this reading to, for example, Desmond Seward's CARAVAGGIO of the same year, in which the author ranted against any recent interpretations of homoeroticism in Caravaggio's sensual paintings, and even against the concept of Caravaggio -- a notoriously violent and tumultuous figure in the history of painting -- having actually earned his lifetime reputation as a criminal!
Beautifully illustrated, well documented, and written with both a sensitivity towards the subject and a refusal to let that sensitivity obscure "the dirt". ..this is a significant addition to the study of one of painting's more fascinating figures. I highly recommend it.

Light inside the Shadows
By A Customer
I found this book to be very entertaining as well as educational. The author did a great job of recreating the setting of Carravaggio's life; the important characters and atmosphere of all the places the artist lived in his nomadic life. Also, I look at Carravaggio's paintings in a new light and am even more impressed and moved by them than previously. Carravaggio's was a tragic life. The author captures the sense of impending doom that hanged over the artist's head like an executioner's sword. The author did a great job of bringing the artist to life with what little is actually known about him, through records, accounts, and most of all his paintings. Through it all there is the sense of an awesome talent and fragile ego, that both humbles and angers all who knew him. I came away realzing that Carravaggio was a man of his times as well as an artist of all time.

Extensively documented and researched, but ...

Everything you need to know - and more - can be found in this book. Unfortunately, some parts suffer from a clunky writing style and odd turns of the phrase. Better editing would have helped it immensely.

The Religion of Ancient Egypt (Cambridge Library Collection - Egyptology), by William Matthew Flinders Petrie

A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) excavated over fifty sites and trained a generation of archaeologists. In this concise 1912 publication, aimed at non-specialists, Petrie discusses the key aspects of ancient Egyptian religion and the philosophies that underpinned it. Beginning with an explanation of the ancient conception of deities, the text explores the various types of god in the Egyptian pantheon and the ancient theory of the afterlife. It also gives due attention to such structures of belief as ritual, priesthood and scripture. The book ends with an examination of the ways in which ancient Egyptian religion spread through the ancient world and how Egyptian ideas were reused and transformed by later religions, including Christianity. Petrie wrote prolifically throughout his long career, and a great many of his other publications - for both specialists and non-specialists - are also reissued in this series.

About the Author
Professor Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie FRS (3 June 1853 - 28 July 1942), known as Flinders Petrie, was an English Egyptologist and a pioneer of systematic methodology in archaeology. He held the first chair of Egyptology in the United Kingdom, and excavated at many of the most important archaeological sites in Egypt, such as Naukratis, Tanis, Abydos and Amarna. Some consider his most famous discovery to be that of the Merneptah Stele, an opinion with which Petrie himself concurred.

Egyptology From the Pen of a Master.
By Ronald E. Parsons
Ancient Egyptian Religion is a massive subject best broached during one's youth. Its development, practices and decline took place over a span of at least 3000 years. Its gods were many. Their mythical areas of 'responsibility' evolved and changed over the millennia. The religion expired long enough ago for its language (expressed in hieroglyphics) to have been forgotten until early in the 19th century after the Rosetta stone was discovered. As a result of the above-stated there is much to be studied.

Author Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie was an early, self-taught Egyptologist whose investigations and writings spanned part of the 19th into the 20th century. His little book of 98 pp., , was resurrected and reprinted by publisher . My copy is dated Sept. 12, 2011.

This book by Petrie remains a fine, brief and well-written route into the study of Egyptian religion which constituted a major part of ancient Egyptian culture. I strongly recommend it to readers of any age who wish to look into the subject.

Oldie but Goody
By Kindle Customer
I got the Kindle edition which is quite readable with a few typos/oddities (for example ThMth for the god normally given as Thoth). Not sure how they got there. Since this is from the turn of the last century, it is clearly not based on the most recent scholarship. Nevertheless, it is very interesting and he has some plausible theories of how some of these theologies came to be. He respects the fuzziness of myth and the vast time period involved. He sees the concepts as changing with place and the people who are in power, merging and blending over time. Language is definitely introductory with little jargon.

I'm not an expert in this area, but have done some reading in mythology. He had some ideas that made me think and see things in a new way. I liked his theory of how the animal and human forms related. I think this would be best for someone like me with some background in mythology looking at how our ideas about mythology developed. If you want an introductory text, I would get something more modern that reflects our advances in knowledge.

early scholarship
By doc peterson
Petrie is a giant figure in Egyptology - he was among the first to begin a serious, systematic study of pre-Roman Egypt. Because of this, _The Religion of Ancient Egypt_ is an attractive read (always helpful to get a sense of historiography) while very much showing its age. In reading it, one must keep in mind the scholarship is over 100 years old: it is no longer acceptable for scholars to refer to ancient beliefs as "barbaric," for example. Similarly, Petrie's theory that Egypitan cosmology originated as monotheism before expanding into polytheism seems quaint in light of more recent scholarship. (See Ancient Egyptain Religion or Religion and Ritual in Ancient Egypt.) Nonetheless, it is fascinating to see a discipline in its formative stages, as Petrie seeks to piece together not only a very complex cosmology (the Egyptian creation story, for example, has three stages of the universe's evolution before man is created), but also the rituals, details of the priesthood, and the nature of private worship.

decorative Russian ornament
By K. Platt
I love all things Russian and this sourcebook is no exception. This incredible reference is written in English, Spanish, French and German. The collection brings together details from ancient Russian manuscripts from the tenth to the sixteenth centuries. The first part of the book contains an introduction then hundreds of interesting decorative motifs in chronological order. The second half of the book provides templates which can be used for tracing or scanning. The designs in the latter are simpler yet larger and can be used in many ways. The designs come from Byzantine, Scandinavian, Russian and Baltic sources. Plate 14 shows delightful peacocks and other birds surrounding an ornate frieze. Several plates show intricate illuminated letters, some from a fourteenth century Psalter. The plates and reproduction is excellent. A wonderful and varied selection of ornament for designers and artists and those who are interested in all things Russian. This review first appeared on yarnsandfabrics website.

A Facet for the Gem (The Tale of Eaglefriend Book 1), by C. L. Murray

In a land of eagle-riding knights, bloodthirsty beasts, and a ruthless prince, no border is safe for long. And as smoke billows from the only blockade standing between the great city of Korindelf and certain doom, young Morlen races to escape the inevitable siege. Thrust from the chaos with thousands of snapping jaws on his trail, he discovers that the abilities he’s buried all his life are awakening—and it could not have happened at a worse time.

War has come, and he doesn’t dare rely on his untested talents after stealing the coveted Goldshard, which makes strength and invincibility just a panicked whisper away. His dependency on it carries him through many dangers, until it becomes an enemy far worse than those he must fight hand-to-hand. And the allies he meets on his quest are just as troubled: a legendary warrior too afraid to leave his sheltered paradise, a wizard tormented by his past, and a disgraced king who has lost any hope of saving his people.

A FACET FOR THE GEM is a coming of age fantasy that brings Morlen from distant kingdoms to sprawling airborne battles, into the fiery breath of a stony dragon and side-by-side with a lady knight who is the last person in need of rescue. Follow him as his epic adventures culminate in a final showdown against swords, fangs, and greatest of all: his own fear.

Entertaining and Inspirational!
By Amazon Customer
I really enjoyed this book! It is very well written and captured my imagination from beginning to end! Many of the challenges that the main character (Morlen) overcomes can be applied to those challenges that we all face today. His eventual triumphs and development into a heroic figure are a testament to the virtues patience, resilience and faith despite all odds!

I highly recommend this entertaining and inspiring book!

Edge of my seat the whole time!

Greatly written! Very exciting fantasy adventure with a little bit of everything. I truly loved the friendship Morlen has with the eagle. Can't wait for the next book in the sequence.

A superb fantasy tale!
By Jason E. Berry
I first have to give kudos to Murray for his superb world-building skills. It is no easy feat for a reader to jump from one world into another. (The book that I read before this one was Hill's 'The Fireman', and I was completely immersed within that story...) However, Murray immediately sucked me into the world that he has created, and I never once looked back!

With names such as Morlen, Felkoth, Nottleforf, and Roftome, and items such as the Goldshard, the Crystal Spear, and the Dark Blade, and enemies known as Shriekers and Ferotaurs, you are immediately thrust into this superb fantasy tale!

Beginning with a fragile alliance between the city of Korindelf and Veldere, where the Eaglemasters reside, and with war brewing along their borders, you have no choice but to hold on for the ride!

If you are a fan of fantasy, then this one is a must-read! If you are a fan of Robin Hobb, then I suggest that you give Murray a shot, as there were some similarities, before Murray completely made it all his own. And for fans of Terry Goodkind, Murray explains the title of the book, brilliantly, just like one of Goodkind's "Wizard's Rules".

Murray dropped several hints, within this story, where he will take us in future books, and I for one am looking forward to the next book!

Gustave Dor (1832–83) was perhaps the most successful illustrator of the nineteenth century. His Dor Bible was a treasured possession in countless homes, and his best-received works continued to appear through the years in edition after edition. His illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy constitute one of his most highly regarded efforts and were Dor's personal favorites.
The present volume reproduces with excellent clarity all 135 plates that Dor produced for The Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise. From the depths of hell onto the mountain of purgatory and up to the empyrean realms of paradise, Dor's illustrations depict the passion and grandeur of Dante's masterpiece in such famous scenes as the embarkation of the souls for hell, Paolo and Francesca (four plates), the forest of suicides, Thas the harlot, Bertram de Born holding his severed head aloft, Ugolino (four plates), the emergence of Dante and Virgil from hell, the ascent up the mountain, the flight of the eagle, Arachne, the lustful sinners being purged in the seventh circle, the appearance of Beatrice, the planet Mercury, and the first splendors of paradise, Christ on the cross, the stairway of Saturn, the final vision of the Queen of Heaven, and many more.
Each plate is accompanied by appropriate lines from the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow translation of Dante's work.

Another astonishing set by the greatest of illustrators
By Robert Moore
As I write this, I am a member of a book group that is working through the three parts of Dante's COMEDY. I am also a fan of Gustave Dore's illustrations, so it was a given that I would get a copy of this to accompany my trip through hell, purgatory, and the heavens with Dante. After having worked through these illustrations, looking at each one as I read the relevant passage in Dante, I simultaneously feel that any enthusiastic reader of Dante should own this book, while at the same time harboring some mild disappointment.

Most of the illustrations are marvelously done. Dore magnificently captures the inner spaciousness and abandonedness of hell. The landscapes, the pits, the caverns, the abysses are all marvelously drawn and conceived. I'm not sure there has ever been a better illustrator than Dore, and in this volume we have Dore at his best. Or, rather, near his best. In fact, I found these illustrations disappointing in two regards. First, virtually all of his human figures look like parodies of classical nude studies. One of the joys of illustrations by Dore to accompany DON QUIXOTE is the wonderful naturalness of his characters. Quixote looks very much like we imagine Quixote, and so does Sancho Panza. But in the COMEDY, Dore's figures look like slightly overweight body builders striking uncomfortable poses. There is an air of artificiality that I at times find somewhat overwhelming. The denizens of hell look spectacularly fit and well-fed. Where are the skinny sinners? The scrawny reprobates?

The second way in which I found the illustrations disappointing is in the depiction of Dante, Virgil, and Beatrice. Dante is actually drawn to correspond as closely as possible with what we know about his appearance. We have a host of drawings of him from the century after his death, though it is not clear whether we have any contemporary drawings. Dante was described as being somewhat lean with a pronounced stoop. The stoop is in full evidence in all of Dore's representations of him. Unfortunately, there is no comparable evidence of his being a human being. He looks more like a chess piece, with little or no movement throughout the entire poem. No matter what he is gazing upon, there is very little difference in any of his poses. While Dante in the poem is vibrantly alive, in the illustrations here he seems stiff and inhuman. Virgil is equally stiff, but he is also astonishingly feminine looking. In fact, I frequently wondered, before I grew accustomed to Dore's manner of drawing Virgil, who the tall woman beside Dante was. Beatrice is clearly a woman, but she is drawn from scene to scene as stiffly as the other two principal characters, and seems as a result an unappealing figure.

Although Dore produced more impressive work (see either his extraordinary illustrations for DON QUIXOTE or THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER), this nevertheless remains remarkable stuff. And while I am not entirely happy with the artificiality of many of the tableaux, they have exerted considerable influence. Indeed, anyone who has seen Fritz Lang's NIEBELUNGENLIED will see the influence of Dore. In the end, Dore at less than his best surpasses most illustrators working beyond their abilities.

Absolutely Wonderful (Really 4 and a half stars)
By Nicole
I have looked at a variety of Dante artists. Some well known and some are not. Suloni Robertson, John Flaxman, Willam Blake, Sandro Botticelli, Sandow Birk, Herb Roe. Do a google search to look at the works of some of these like Sandow Birk. There are some that are more obscure which in a way documents the Comedy, more specifically the Inferno. I'm not going to say who I don't like but Dore is the best. I am rather specific about artists. Dore makes the grade. He is good, really good and when you look at this book, you feel like you are in the terrible depths of hell. I like purgatorio too. I feel the religious prayer songs in my head as I see Beatrice's entrance. There is so much symbolism in these pictures, especially in Paradiso. Though I do disagree with the depiction of Muhammad in hell, the rest is fantastic. I mean that he looks more like he's British then Middle Eastern. I imagine him with blonde hair in the plate. The tortured look on Dante's face in the plate with Betrand de Born, (The cover pic) is extraordinary. I felt how he felt. That is why Dore is so good. I had also hoped for more detail with Ugolino because his story is fantastically horrifying.

The book is a must for any Dante fan. I look at it a lot, even if I have seen the pictures hundreds of times. I really don't think that you can get bored with this. There is always something new to look at. Some detail you looked over. Buy this book because the scans online don't give the justice that this book has. Buy it, look it over, get inspired by it. Maybe we will see your work on Amazon in the near future.

A Good Book To Have Around
By Tom
As you may already know, this is the pocket-sized version of Mickey Flodin's "Perigee Dictionary of Sign." Filled with clear illustrations, descriptions of each sign and memory aids as well, this book is a wonderful resource to carry with you for "emergencies." Don't depend on this to give you enough vocabulary to have a real conversation, but do consider it a valuable tool in many social circumstances. As a Deaf ASL teacher, I can recommend this book to anyone who wants to carry with them a safety net! :o)

Fundamentals of Wireless Communication, by David Tse, Pramod Viswanath

The past decade has seen many advances in physical layer wireless communication theory and their implementation in wireless systems. This textbook takes a unified view of the fundamentals of wireless communication and explains the web of concepts underpinning these advances at a level accessible to an audience with a basic background in probability and digital communication. Topics covered include MIMO (multi-input, multi-output) communication, space-time coding, opportunistic communication, OFDM and CDMA. The concepts are illustrated using many examples from real wireless systems such as GSM, IS-95 (CDMA), IS-856 (1 x EV-DO), Flash OFDM and UWB (ultra-wideband). Particular emphasis is placed on the interplay between concepts and their implementation in real systems. An abundant supply of exercises and figures reinforce the material in the text. This book is intended for use on graduate courses in electrical and computer engineering and will also be of great interest to practising engineers.

Review
"Tse and Viswanath achieve remarkable clarity in combining sound theoretical development, simple insights, and current practice into an integrated whole. Fundamentals of Wireless Communication will quickly become a classic, serving both as a reference and a textbook built on firm principles."
Professor Robert G. Gallager, MIT

"Fundamentals of Wireless Communication is a terrific introduction to principles of physical-layer design for state-of-the-art wireless systems. It is a wonderful and much-needed resource for new graduate students and practicing professionals alike. Tse and Viswanath have written a text of enduring value."
Professor Gregory W. Wornell, MIT

"Fundamentals of Wireless Communication is a unique combination of engineering insight, theoretical vision and systems experience. This is the text I use to explain to graduate students how they should think about fading channels."
Professor Robert Calderbank, Princeton University

"David Tse and Pramod Viswanath have succeeded in developing a superb textbook covering the field of modern wireless communications. The book, Fundamentals of Wireless Communication, truly covers the fundamentals of a wireless system design and incorporates a lucid exposition of the most recent advances such as MIMO and opportunistic communication. The results are derived with exceeding clarity and often linked to an information theoretical framework, thus providing the reader with a clear understanding of optimal design choices for both point-to-point and multiple access wireless communication... this textbook will be extremely valuable not only to graduate students pursuing research in wireless systems but also to engineering professionals who have the task of designing and developing future wireless technologies."
Dr. Roberto Padovani, Qualcomm Inc.

“This is a book written by academics, primarily for graduate courses. The style fits that role perfectly. It is predominantly mathematical, often using the maths as part of the way to describe a concept. However, it is an improvement over many graduate texts. The style of writing is open and relaxed. There are many real world examples explaining how concepts are related in 2G and 3G systems. The use of illustrations is excellent and there are copious exercises at the end of each chapter...I think that as a graduate text this would be truly excellent.”
William Webb, IEE Communications Engineer

"The book Fundamentals of Wireless Communication, written by David Tse and Pramod Viswanath, presents a very good summary of the concepts and techniques used for the physical layer of radio networks that have emerged mainly during the last 10 years. The first chapters introduce wireless fading channels, diversity, multiple access, and interference management. The second part of the book covers the topic of multiple antennas, especially MIMO systems, with the authors concentrating on spectral efficiency and bit error probability...I strongly recommend this book for graduate students taking a course in wireless systems. The first four chapters can be recommended for use in an undergraduate course in wireless communications as well."

The only one of its kind
By vidyut
This actually is the only book that presents a treatment of wireless communincations in throughly rigorous way, and yet does not loose touch with practice. The usual books in digital communication, especially the industry standard Salehi, have mostly been outdated by this book.

I have done coursework with Viswanath, and was one of the students on which the initial drafts of this books was "tried and tested." Viswanath has few equals in his research area (which itself he keeps expanding), and consistently amazes everyone with how closely he is in touch with what the industry is doing. This is reflected throughout the book.

The book can be reqd with the standard prereqs - a good understanding of undergraduate to first year graduate probability is required understand anything in communications theory, so that goes without saying. Some parts of the book will carry more juice for people who have a good knowledge of information theory, but Tse & Viswanath include a beautifully written appendix for people without this knowledge. The appendix is worth reading by itself, even for people who have taken courses in information theory before! The chapter that compares various wireless systems alone is worth the price of the book.

As another reviewer pointed out, the exercises are not all simple. These were given in a homework setting, and there were TA's to assist people with the problems. They may be a little hard to solve alone.

One of the best
By R
Compares well with the classics:
1) Gallagher
2) Wozencraft & Jacobs
3) O & S (Signal processing)

This is how text books ought to be written. Also, David Tse was key in developing the multiuser diversity concepts at QCOM. Hence - the book also has good engineering isights.

Chapters 7, 8 and v good.
Appendix also useful.
Easy readability.
How each topic changes from AWGN to fading channels is well explained.
