About the Author
Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan was born in New York City and was educated in the Torah Voda'as and Mir Yeshivot in Brooklyn. After years of study at Jerusalem's Mir Yeshiva, he was ordained by some of Israel's foremost rabbinic authorities. He also earned a master's degree in physics and was listed in Who's Who in Physics in the United States. In the course of a writing career spanning only 12 years, Rabbi Kaplan earned a reputation as one of the most effective, persuasive, scholarly, and prolific exponents of Judaism in the English language. He died on January 28, 1983, at the age of 48.

Battle Cry of Freedom is the one book to read about the Civil War and the issues leading up to it.

I have read at least 50 books about the Civil War. The Battle Cry of Freedom was the one book that tied everything together as to why we were at war in the first place. It is not just about the war itself but about those times in America where our attitudes were. The book ties in everything about the those times and the war itself and how one issue or battled lead to political issues that had a huge impact on decision. It really shows how strong Abraham Lincoln was in his determination not to give in and to preserve one nation. If you could read only one book about this troubling time in our country, this would be the book.

Top Shelf of the Civil War Library

McPherson's "Battle Cry" is arguably the best single-volume account of the Civil War. Nearly 30 years since its initial publication by Oxford, this book is still being used at the university level to educate students about the Civil War. McPherson not only wrote a masterful narrative, he also sourced the text impeccably. Further, I disagree with some previous reviews that the writer has a political bias or agenda, if you will. As a Civil War historian, I can confidently state that writing in a neutral voice about this period is one of the most difficult challenges an author faces. McPherson gives ample time to both "sides" of the cause and puts forth well-documented facts. Those who dispute his objectivity have ample resources, provided through detailed footnotes and an extensive bibliography, to research the author's claims.
If you are just becoming interested in the Civil War or seeking to extend your knowledge, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. From novices to academics, this is the one book that must be on your shelf.

McPherson's works are second-to-none.

I am a military historian and my opinion is that Dr. McPherson has written the definitive encompassing Civil War historical work. "The Battle Cry of Freedom" (supplemented with some of Dr. McPherson's related books like "The Atlas of the Civil War," and others) is second-to-none. I mean no disrespect what-so-ever to Shelby Foote's "The Civil War." Foote's works speak for themselves, no question. But because Battle Cry is written in such an engaging style that reads like a novel while extensively relating and documenting the historical intricacies of the times was, for me, a pleasure to read and study. I highly recommend this text for anyone, scholar or layman, who is looking for a descriptive and informed one-volume history of this tragic time in America's history.

About the Author

Dr. Sue Bredekamp is an early childhood education specialist from Washington, DC who serves as a consultant and author on curriculum, teaching, and professional development for state and national organizations such as the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the Council for Professional Recognition, the Head Start Bureau, and Sesame Workshop. She is well-known as the co-author of NAEYC’s highly influential publications on Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Programs serving Children from Birth through Age 8. Dr. Bredekamp developed NAEYC’s accreditation system and served as Director of Professional Development from 1981 to 1998. She is also an advisor to the Head Start National Center on Quality Teaching and Learning, and serves on the Board of the HighScope Educational Research Foundation. From 2007 to 2009, she was a member of the National Research Council’s (NRC) Committee on Early Childhood Mathematics which produced a landmark report, Mathematics in Early Childhood: Paths toward Excellence and Equity. She co-authored Learning to Read and Write: Developmentally Appropriate Practices for Young Children.

Dr. Bredekamp has devoted her career to learning about and from children, and translating that knowledge for new and experienced teachers. She has been a visiting lecturer at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia; Monash University in Melbourne; University of Alaska; and University of Hawaii. Dr. Bredekamp holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Maryland.

A must-read for any center director or manager who truly cares about developmentally appropriate practice.

This is a wonderful book. If you're truly concerned about how your daycare workers and preschool teachers care for their young charges, you've got to read this book. Anyone can run a daycare center where the children are fed, kept clean, and housed in a safe environment. This book explains how to ensure that the children can learn, grow, and flourish in a positive manner while they are in the care of your center staff.

About the Author
Sema Onat earned her illumination diploma after being trained for many years in the art of Turkish illumination. Focusing on drawing techniques, illumination motifs, floral ornamentation, and miniatures, Onat completed her specialty courses in 2009. She now gives illumination lessons from her workshops in Istanbul. She has organized various projects with her students, and has participated in many exhibitions, both domestically and abroad. Her works have also been displayed in many private collections, and she has received several prestigious awards in classical illumination and miniature arts, including accreditation from the Turkish Ministry of Culture as an official artist, which is given to select individuals of outstanding achievement in art.

Should have read this in college

I have been an art teacher for 10 years. I SO wish I had read this back in college. The toughest part of being an artist is finding creative ideas. This book gives a list of ways to alter ideas to make them original and creative. It also discusses ways of organizing artworks that go beyond the "golden mean". We forget, as creative people, that these skills don't come naturally to everyone. These creativity techniques should be taught and practiced by those that are learning to be creative! I really think working through these creativity methods would solve the problem of "everyone's project looks the same!"

Great subject, yet slightly difficult to read.

The Author has done a great job encouraging the reader to get out of their comfort zone and experiment in various approaches to art. I teach AP Art and plan to use some of his image development strategies to spur creative thinking for the subject they are exploring. Not as clear or easy to read as Bert Dodson's Drawing with Imagination. Although this was highly recommended to me as an AP teacher, I would opt for the Dodson book instead.

Excellent Reference

This book has a lot of big pictures and not a lot of writing - which I like. The writing that is there is high-quality and helpful. I'm a high school art teacher and it's one of the best design textbooks I've found. It's full of good-quality lesson ideas.
